Can someone that knows more about criminal trials than me explain how they can add on lesser charges after the fact that he will likely do time for? What am I missing here?

The dumbass lawyer tried to say that in his arguments.
"they told you to leave, and you just went down river in front of them and blocked their path"
Never mind that fact that he doesn't have to listen to them, but he actually left them alone and started walking down river looking down in the water for the phone, having zero interaction with them nor blocking them, then they started berating him and acting like a bunch of hyenas.
I wanted the old man to stand up when the lawyer said that and tell the lawyer "hey jackass, leave right now. Since i said leave, you have to leave, right?"
