Norwegian Cruise Ship departs port leaving 8 passengers stranded in Africa

I'm no cruise ship fan, and I know damn well the OT's opinion of them, but this story is interesting.
NBC NEws: Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them
I've heard that these boats don't frick around with the whole 'you better be back by this time or we're leaving you're arse here' thing.
Looks like these folks are getting a lot more adventure than they planned.
NBC NEws: Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.
The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship, which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20, for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.
But on March 27, the group of eight tourists were late to return to the ship for the all aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion, which was not organized by the cruise line, on the island.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.
“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.
"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.
quote:
Jill Campbell said that they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal Monday night.
But now they're reconsidering if they even want to return to the cruise.
"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."
"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and wellbeing of the customers should be their first priority," Jill Campbell added.
Norwegian noted the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

Tough shite. They knew what time they were supposed to be back and didn’t make it.

If they have to wait for these inconsiderate assholes every cruise would be delayed at every port waiting on more inconsiderate assholes. frick these people I hope it cost them thousands in additional travel.

A couple was on Today this morning and NCL is allowing them back on board at the current port of call.
The woman, has to be a Karen, said they might not rejoin the cruise because they feel although the rules are stated, NCL was too rigid in following the rules.
What an entitled couple and if I were the man I’d be ashamed he allowed his wife to speak for them that way on national television.
This should be a non story from the get go. A private excursion runs this risk whereas a line sponsored one would not.
People are soft.

The intersection of Cruise and Africa is not ever going to be in my itinerary.
That’s like 2:00 am and the projects.
Hard Pass
tl/dr: Stupid tricks/Shitty prizes

Sounds like they missed the departure time. All on them. Would they expect Delta to hold a plane full of passengers at the gate until they decided to leave the bar?
Maybe if getting left on the dock upsets you, it might be a good idea to return before departure time to make sure you don't miss leaving when everyone else leaves.

Best part is they spent thousands to link up with the cruise ship at a different port and still couldn't make it on due to low tide
Yes, they're morons

This is why you should book through the ship. If their tour is late getting back, they wait for you. I learned that first hand. Tour bus blew out a tire on the interstate in Mexico. It was pouring down raining making it hard to get it fixed. When we pulled up to the dock finally, everyone was on their balconies waving and cheering like we were hostages that had been freed. It is quite funny to look back on. Not so funny at the time.

Imagine having to live with this Karen everyday.

The over use of “reach out” has become a cancer to society.
I’m starting to immediately discredit or ignore anyone that uses it in daily conversation.

I would have mocked her during the interview after hearing that had I been the anchor.
Guess she doesn’t understand the concept of rules.

I’ve never been on a cruise but I think the rules are pretty clear
Posted on 4/2/24 at 2:25 pm to Giantkiller
I went on a cheap cruise for a bachelor party once and I cannot express how repetitively clear they made it that they will leave your arse if you don’t make it back in time
Sucks to suck for those folks

I guarantee you she is one of those people who shows up 20 minutes late to everything and thinks so highly of herself that she thinks everyone should be waiting on her hand and foot.
It isn't hard to be on time for shite.
