Minimum wage has been the same since 2009, 15 years. That's the longest length of time it's gone without an increase since it's inception in 1938.

It needs to go up, and it needs to go up now. F small business owners. Pay employees a livable wage.

I'm very late to this thread, so maybe this has been said, but my understanding is that very few places actually are paying minimum wage anyway. I know around Baton Rouge, the fast food places are all paying $10-$12/hr despite minimum wage being $7 and change.

Min wage is over $10 here but no one is close to paying that.

What's the pay and retirement look like?

I left over ten years ago but at that time a conductor was making around $75K for newer guys iirc. I was over $100k as an engineer.

Guys retiring at that time were getting over $4k/month railroad retirement. (Railroaders do not pay into SS) That does not include their 401K.

Things have obviously gone up since then but I don't keep up with it.

*The numbers shown online with Indeed and Glassdoor are generally not accurate, but I see a range from around $100-160k for BNSF engineers currently. They were very low compared to what I was making when I compared years ago.

What's kind of funny is despite the explosion in labor costs and cost of product over the past few years, the fact is that McDonald's has seen a profit margin growth of nearly 20% since the start of Covid.

Seems like McDonalds et al are doing pretty alright.

Shows it is not needed.

I don't know of a single place locally that pays minimum wage.

Do any of the OT moderates ever make posts that don't come off as completely emotional in these topics?

You're probably right, but I'm sure there are still businesses out there that pay $7.25 because the federal government says they have too.

It just needs to be increased in general. I don't get how it can not be raised at all over 14 years. It's wild. Meanwhile the cost of living has increased 25-30% since 2009.

Rent for a one bedroom in 2009 was like $850, now it's close to $1200.

The idiots who eat at McDonalds received the highest stipends during COVID, gave them some extra spending cash.

I’ll type out your answer for you, “But muh PPP”

If anything, you’re making the argument for why it doesn’t need to exist at all. Nobody is even paying minimum wage anymore, so there’s no real need for it.

This post would be smart except margins actually went down for McDonalds during 2020 and 2021 but then rebounded and hit new highs in 2022 and 2023.

Whoops.

Oh no my profits!” Bad businesses deserve to die anyways so if you can’t compete just die off.

Have you ever run a small business?

Ever managed a franchise?

How much profit do you think someone who risks their livelihood should receive?

More than other workers at the same location, right? How much more? And should their profits for risking their livelihood be capped at all?

Edited: I know I’m wasting my time asking you. You simply won’t answer these questions.

Why do all wages have to be livable? Most of us have had plenty of jobs for extra money at various points in our lifetimes. Under no circumstances did they constitute livable wages. What changed

The cost of living. The goal should be to lower that first, but burying our heads in the sand and seeing how the disparity between income and costs over the last 40 years is leaving a large portion of this conversation off the table.

He's one of those that thinks the guy with all the risk shouldn't make any more than those working for him.

If someone is paying their employees $7.25 an hour the rest of us are having to subsidize their employees with food stamps, welfare, and whatever else.

You’re either a troll or a POS liberal. Hard to tell sometimes. My wife and I started a small business and opened just over a year ago. We both have full time jobs while running the business. We pay well-above minimum wage and cannot find enough willing workers or those that will just show up regularly on time. People are lazy and untrustworthy.

The amount of time, effort, and money we’ve put into this was and continues to be a huge gamble. My risk shouldn’t be everyone else’s reward.
