Respectfully, I don't know how you can say this. There is no AV without Carrey. There have ever only been a few truly unique actors/comedians that could have the kind of range Carrey has both with his comedy and his serious roles. Robin Williams is another, like someone else mentioned. You remove Carrey from AV:WNC and it doesn't work. It only ever worked because of Carrey and how outlandish he is as a person.

I think his point is the movie itself (and script) is tighter and funnier that it would be funny even without Carrey. I think he was speaking to how it was just a funnier movie overall, whereas the silliness of Carrey carried the first one.

I get that the over-the-top buffoonary has its place and its moments

but the schtick is exhaustion and unoriginal after the first 4 minutes of silliness its the same over and over and over

mix it up . Python had its over the top absurdity, but it hit
because there was a lull

I can watch Python over and over
haven't watched any of Careys stuff for a second time ever

its like an ugly girl that's eager to please after a while you realize

shes ugly and its gross

I mean who else could have pulled that off?

Steve Martin in his heyday. But not better than Carrey did it.

Steve Martin's "Ace Ventura" was "The Jerk" 15 years earlier--a classic. Now if only Navin Johnson could get together with Ace, or even better, "Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest"?

Love them both. The 2nd one was funnier.

You must not have seen all of his movies. He's a very good actor

Wow. To this day, still the hardest I’ve ever laughed in a movie theatre was when he got to Mary’s house and had his stomach nuked by Lloyd, with him driving on his scooter laughing like the wicked witch.

I still use

"Maybe you should wear these extra gloves. My hands are starting to get sweaty."
"Extra gloves? You've had this pair of extra gloves this whole time?"
"Yeah...we're in the Rockies."

His 6-7 year run was insane:

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)
The Mask (1994)
Dumb and Dumber (1994)
Batman Forever (1995)
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995)
The Cable Guy (1996)
Liar Liar (1997)
The Truman Show (1998)
Man on the Moon (1999)
Me, Myself & Irene (2000)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Carrey took the project basically as his last shot to make it

I don't believe that. He was already famous, just not ultra-famous. Living Color was extremely popular and he was one of the most popular characters. Just like people knew who Adam Sandler was from SNL prior to his string of successful movies. Ace was successful because Carrey was so popular, he brought moviegoers out for that. His performance notwithstanding, he was an asset for the production, not the other way around. Even if Ace had bombed, or had production canceled by the studio for some reason, he was going to get more shots. In fact he'd already been hired for other movies before Ace was even released, which is why he starred in two additional releases that same year.
