- The script had apparently been floating around Hollywood from years and was considered a total piece of shite.

- Grier was actually offered the lead, but turned it down, as did many others.

-Carrey took the project basically as his last shot to make it and basically said 'fuk it, I'm going all out for once in my career for a film'

- After seeing the film, Grier, Chris Rock and everyone else still thought the film was a disaster.

- A year later, Carrey was the "$20 Million Man"

Just goes to show you how much bias can influence your opinion. Once they felt the script was trash, their minds were made up.

The script is trash. The movie is stupid. It only works because Jim Carrey went all out with the stupidity.

That was kind of my point.

I don't doubt the script was trash. I'm saying that influenced their opinion of what they saw.

An yeah, the movie was dumb, but the performance speaks for itself.

It probably would be a piece of shite with anybody else. I certainly can't imagine anybody launching they're career like Jim Carrey did off of it.

Hard to end a movie career when you don't got one.

Even if Ace bombed, it wouldn't have been a roadblock to keep doing what he was doing on TV.

Carrey had been trying to become a movie star for a decade. He was a giant hit on Carson in 1984. He was in multiple shite/bomb b-movies in the 80s.

In Living Color was his first real success, although pretty minor at that since the show was pretty niche. The prevailing thought was that he would be a big star, but it never happened until Ace Ventura.

Who wrote the script and were they blackballed? Wasn't Courtney Cox in that movie?

Was also Tom Shadyac's first feature as a director and used the movie's success to get The Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, and Bruce Almighty after this. Really helped jumpstart two careers.

Also shoutout to Tone Loc, who ruled in that movie.

He also had The Mask and Dumb and Dumber coming out later that year.

I thought I had heard/read that Carrey did AV trying to help setup The Mask? He filmed Mask before AV but the special effects would make it come out after.

While the Mask might have done it, (though many say its popularity was pushed by Ace Ventura fame), Dumb and Dumber was made because of Ace Ventura. They went through a completely insane production run in order to get it filmed and released before the end of the year. The film was in development hell for years prior till they saw an advance screening of Ventura and went “that’s it, that’s our guy.”

He could have retired after those 2 hits.

100%

One of those rare situations where the sequel clearly exceeds the original

Interesting. I didn't know they could rush a movie out that fast.

Maybe it was trash. And it took a force of nature like Jim Carrey to make it funny.

I mean who else could have pulled that off?

1994 was a beast of a year for Carey.

Lots in interesting trivia in this article.
