Deadline confirmed that Francesca would play Juliet in the adaptation, which opens on May 23 at the Duke of York's Theatre.
I can't blame Romeo for betraying his family for such a fine piece of arse.

Interesting they are going to have The White Monteque and the Black Capulets as mortal enemies. That’s the message that will make this fresh right?

I wonder if they will share the revelation at the end that both houses are responsible and their hatred for each other cost them their beloved children and reconcile their differences.
Or are they going to adapt the message for “modern audiences”.

The only problem I have with this is that the actress is fugly. Should have cast Holland's real life girlfriend instead.

Progressivism abhors beauty and grace.

First, this actress is 23 years old.
Juliet is not even 14-years old in the play.
Second, there were Moors in Italy at the time so, okay, no big deal...but that was Southern Italy.
But the egregious sin is...

Juliet being from Verona, Italy, she is probably of Norman descent and, therefore, is fair with light hair (blonde, perhaps) and blue or green eyes. (To this day, many northern Italians are of this coloring.)

Romeo extols Juliet's beauty by likening her to a fire's light, suggesting her beauty holds significant power. He compares her to a star, indicating her beauty is rare and otherworldly. He also describes her as a dove among crows.

Timeless tales can be retold without having to literally race and gender swap... or APPROPRIATE existing characters.
But current day Hollywood and Broadway are going to current day us whether we want it or not.

Wait until you find out who originally played Juliet
He was probably better looking though.

Who? Oh, right. Who cares? The STORY is what is being changed here. How are you not getting this?

He's pointing out that in Shakespeare's time they didn't use female actors but rather pre-pubescent boys or guys with high voices to play all of the female parts.
And this story has been changed a dozen times - West Side Story, etc. - as have most of Shakespeare's works.

How is this a story change while having a man play the role is "who cares"?
You haven't explained it, which is probably why some of us are not getting it.

She's supposed to be like a young Helen of Troy...that's part (a huge part) of the narrative and accounts for Romeo's instant overwhelming attraction and subsequent behavior.
I mean casting Juliet, the audience has to buy into it. Why not just throw Al Bundy up there to play Achilles... He scored 4 TDs in a high school football game once upon a time, I'm sure he can act the part.

And in Leo and Claire Dane’s Romeo + Juliet (which was wildly popular in the late 90s) Mercutio was Black and the Capulets were Hispanic.

Well, it's about time those unsung millions of Renaissance-era black Italians finally get their due representation. How they have been so completely erased from history after their multitude of important scientific and artistic contributions is a travesty.
