Vowing the U.S. Will ‘Do Our Job,’ Johnson Searches for a Path on Ukraine

The Republican speaker, with his job on the line, has privately told people he would make sure the House moves to assist Ukraine, a step that many members of his party oppose.

quote:

When Speaker Mike Johnson opened the floor for questions at a closed-door luncheon fund-raiser in New Jersey last month, Jacquie Colgan asked how, in the face of vehement opposition within his own ranks, he planned to handle aid for Ukraine.

What followed was an impassioned monologue by Mr. Johnson in which he explained why continued American aid to Kyiv was, in his view, vital — a message starkly at odds with the hard-right views that have overtaken his party. He invoked his political roots as a Reagan Republican, denounced President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia as a “madman” and conceded the issue had forced him to walk a “delicate political tightrope.”

Reminded by Ms. Colgan, a member of the American Coalition for Ukraine, a nonprofit advocacy group, of the adage that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil was for good people to do nothing, Mr. Johnson replied that he kept a copy of the quotation framed in his office.

“That’s not going to be us,” he assured her. “We’re going to do our job.”

The exchange reflects what Mr. Johnson has privately told donors, foreign leaders and fellow members of Congress in recent weeks, according to extensive notes Ms. Colgan took during the New Jersey event and interviews with several other people who have spoken with him.

While the speaker has remained noncommittal about any one option, he has repeatedly expressed a personal desire to send aid to Ukraine — something he has voted against repeatedly in the past — and now appears to be in search of the least politically damaging way to do it.

The challenge for Mr. Johnson is that any combination of aid measures he puts to a vote will likely infuriate the growing isolationist wing of his party, which considers the issue toxic. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia, who has repeatedly said she would call a snap vote to unseat the speaker if he allowed a vote for Ukraine aid before imposing restrictive immigration measures, filed a resolution on Friday calling for his removal, saying she wanted to send him “a warning.”

Yeah its so "hard right" to not want to get involved in wars around the globe with very little interest to us.

This is the Vietnam of our generation. Just keep pouring gas on that fire and see how quickly it burns out.

...as MAGA is the loudest voice against giving money to Ukraine...and has been since the beginning of this war.

He caved on everything the Democrats wanted. I'm sure he'll do the same for Ukraine money. Dude is a bitch. Has this nutless loser moved to expel Gallagher yet, so that a special election can take place in WI? Probably not. Because he's a bitch.

It's one thing to get beat. It's another to be a coward and a bitch. Johnson has entered Jeff Sessions territory of cowardice.

Apparently not.

What have good people done in this situation? Take out a loan with the backs of American taxpayers as collateral?

And there lies your problem with American politicians. These people are so delusional they think they are there for a higher purpose than what they got elected to do.

I live in Louisiana. Most of the state is conservative and vote for republicans, and those that vote democrat do so because they want the government to give THEM something. Nobody here wants to send money to Ukraine. But how much of our congressional representation went ahead and voted for it. L

I think every Republican should spend the next seven months absolutely obsessing over attacking the Speaker for accepting current political reality instead of focusing on beating Democrats in elections.

What a worthless, gutless coward. There is absolutely nothing about Ukraine that is worth one cent of American taxpayer dollars. For the retards like Boosie, the cold war ended more than 30 years ago. Do you really think the Russians are going to try and march into DC or something?

after Ukraine ultimately gets it's arse kicked, then it will be "oh, we must send billions and billions to Ukraine to re-build" The cycle will never end. After the "re-building" is finished, they'll pick right back up using it as their money laundering playground for foreign aid kickbacks. they're not even trying to hide it, anymore. because there are no consequences

Explain this without Mike Johnson being compromised.

No amount of money will save Ukraine. They literally have no troops left, and supply chains are drying up. The only options are to send in NATO (Ignite WW3) or force Zelenskyy to the table, and concede territory. Zelenskyy conceding sounds like a loss for the west, but it’s better than the alternative. After a settlement the west could at least pause the war, then setup some type of buffer zone, and start working on Ukrainian entry into NATO.

I don't know much about Mr. Johnson, but anybody who is intellectually more mature than about 15 years old understands that the US can't pull back from foreign intervention like a turtle into its shell without major negative consequences.

The only politicians going along with the "Muh 'Merca First" Jimmy Carter style isolationist nonsense are either trailer-park stupid (Boebert) or simply feeding the useful idiots what they have been told by Tucker Carlson that they want to hear (Trump...who actually bombed Syria for reasons that had absolutely nothing to do with directly defending US interests during his first term).

I think Mike Johnson is under extreme duress. He was all in favor of border first, until he had that meeting in the Whitehouse.

I honestly believe he's been told in no uncertain terms that something very bad for his health or the health and safety of loved ones are at risk, and the threats are credible enough that he's scared and acting as instructed.

God damn it!
