My 19 yo son has worked since he was 16 learning electrical, plumbing, carpentry at a hill country villa . He’s now taking business and marketing classes .He met the CEO of marketing while working and was offered an internship at Navidia next summer. You have a better chance of finding a job if you’re in the workforce!

Come on man, if your had a son who is a math/science genius, makes a 34 or better on his ACT, and wants to become a fill in the blank(engineer, surgeon, nuclear physicist, etc.). You would tell him to become a plumber? Haha, no way.

Ditch the college stuff, go to trade school and become a plumber and make good cash. Next idea, become a millwright.

Unless you are getting a highly specialized degree these days, I just don't see how college is worth it over a trade school.
What ends up being classified as “highly specialized”?

Engineering and accounting are great careers with plenty of room for entrepreneurialism. In engineering, I like the electrical discipline because there will be so much work on the grid over the next few decades. I also like controls engineering, which is usually a sub-discipline of Electrical.

Well, no shite. But, lay it out for us, Dad. Is he building the AI or becoming g a consequence of it? STEM isn't insulated at all. A brainiac accountant can't be replaced by a program another brainiac developed? OK

What would you recommend to an 18 year old heading to college today in terms of a promising job/career with lots of growth, high demand, and potential going forward?
Industrial Technology or Architecture. Whatever you do, DO NOT let him pursue a legal career. That route will turn him into a crook or a politician, or both.
C'mon man, I thought you liked me - Joe Biden

Sales. Sounds sleazy but I’m not talking about cars. I’m talking about technology.

Constuction in the specialty trades. Heating and Air, plumbing and electrical. There is so much opportunity here and because there is a massive shortage in these arenas you can name your price. Unlimited potential.
I am advising my son to go to college, get a business degree, while in school work for one of those three trades and come out of school and start his own company.

This is dumb. I can’t believe (although knowing this board, I shouldn’t be surprised) the amount of people here saying not to go to college.

Trade school. HVAC, plumbing, instrumentation, electrician. Get a decade of experience working for someone else then start your own company.
