released Today in 1988
Do you love the Pixies?
Where’s Is My Mind? live 1988 (well known and I love this song)
Surfer Rosa is often included on critics' lists of the best rock albums.
Alternative rock artists including Billy Corgan and PJ Harvey have cited it as an inspiration; it was an influence on Nirvana's 1993 album In Utero.
All tracks written by Black Francis, except "Gigantic written by Black Francis and Kim Deal.
1. "Bone Machine" 3:02
2. "Break My Body" 2:04
3. "Something Against You" 1:47
4. "Broken Face" 1:29
5. "Gigantic" 3:54
6. "River Euphrates" 2:31
7. "Where Is My Mind?" 3:53
8. "Cactus" 2:15
9. "Tony's Theme" 1:51
10. "Oh My Golly!" 2:32
11. "Vamos" 4:21
12. "I'm Amazed" 1:41
13. "Brick Is Red" 2:00
Total length: 33:21

Across more than three decades of music, finding a rock artist who hasn’t channelled the style that the Pixies pioneered on their debut album is nearly impossible. As the template for both grunge and eventual post-punk/pop-punk/garage-rock/everything-rock, Surfer Rosa is one of the most consequential records of all time.

Yes. Have tickets for them, Cat Power, and Modest Mouse in North Charleston. Of course, I had Ween tickets too and that didn't work out. Still pissed. Doolittle is also extraordinary.

That is a great lineup. I wish they were coming closer. Pretty big Modest Mouse fan too

Come On Pilgrim precedes Surfer Rosa and is even better. 8 perfect songs.

You've been on an 80s tear lately. I approve

One of the greatest albums of all-time. Close call between it and Doolittle for best Pixies album. Doolittle probably more complete album, but Surfer Rosa may be more fun.

Yes it does but it’s consider a mini album

Pixies are an awesome band that I was late getting onboard with.

Yes I guess I should go over to that best decade thread. But I would split the decades.
Late eighties/early nineties

Point being that earlier and better music from them existed, right out of the gate. Almost an impossibility, considering the musical landscape of 1987.

I love that they released that first album. Just further proves my point that 1987 was the best year in new Album Releases

I think Surfer Rosa is better than Come On Pilgram, but obviously subjective. Both are great.

Great album and album cover....

There’s no other band quite like Pixies in my mind. When you look at the stratus of genres that bands that list them as strong influences covers, it’s pretty mind boggling.

It has their best song in "Where Is My Mind?" and some other good songs, but best rock album? No. some of the songs on this album are pretty forgettable IMO.
Doolittle is a much better album end to end.

I agree.. I think Albini helped dial in their signature sound on Surfer Rosa..

Great album/band. It’s too bad Albini is the biggest douche in music history. He’s the Keith Olberman of music.
