Very clicky town. If you’re not from there it’s hard to fit in.

That’s true of a lot of Deep East Texas towns. No matter how essential you are to your job, you ain’t one of them.

My company has an office in Tyler, Texas and I have spent a good bit of time there. Nice town and is growing. As others have said it is near Dallas and has plenty of lakes near if you enjoy fishing and/or water sports. They also have a really nice zoo. I wouldn’t live in Tyler itself. Would look to one of the surrounding communities. Lindale to the north, Whitehouse to the southeast or Bullard to the southwest. All three are growing and have newer schools and infrastructure and all are anywhere from 10-20 minute drive to heart if Tyler. For a small to midsize town it has a good selection of restaurants, the aforementioned zoo,
And not too far from a nice water park. It is also a big medical hub.

I feel like anywhere would be better than Lake Charles...
Also, Tyler is pretty cool spot. Go check it out this weekend and make an informed decision!

I live in Tyler now. To echo what others have said, it depends on what you are looking for. Compared to LC I’d say it’s a no brainer in almost any category.
Pros:
- up and coming medium sized town feel. (Especially in the south part)
- some bang for your buck (though getting less so by the day)
- East Texas has the most tolerable weather in Texas IMO.
- lots of trees.
- trophy wives are easy on the eyes
Cons:
- others say it is close to Dallas but that is a relative term and I don’t agree for my needs. For me Dallas is somewhere you go to get the restaurants and amenities a Tyler doesn’t have (including DFW). It is two hours to DFW which is not close for an airport. Must drive your car and leaving it in LT parking. I don’t generally want to drive four hours total for a meal so don’t go there often for dinner.
- traffic sucks. It’s sprawled and there is a dangerous combination of old slow drivers and aggressive 150 driving types.
- food options for anything decent are almost non existent.
- not bike friendly.
- no charm or nice downtown area.
Having said all of this it is probably a good place to raise a family and certainly better than LC.

You would be close to great fishing, if that’s your gig.

The unbelievable longevity of President Tyler's family is really something. To think think here are people alive today whose grandfather was born in 1790 - so that this one family, from father to son to grandson, has seen the entirety of American history, from horse & buggy to moonshots - is very hard to absorb.

I’m surprised there is reservation at all. Tyler is a great American small city and should be pretty desirable to anyone - and very desirable if coming from Lake Charles

Tyler, President from 1841-1845, was also responsible for bringing Texas into the United States. Tip of the hat, sir, well done.
And let us not forget Tyler's favorite son, the Tyler Rose, Earl Campbell.

On what basis?
Lake Charles has good restaurants, concerts/entertainment at the casinos, festivals, outdoor recreation (hunting, fishing, golf, boating)
I don’t know how you could look at Tyler and Lake Charles and think that Tyler is some no-brainer upgrade. Maybe it is better, maybe it isn’t.
