Any Tohatsu owners in here? I'm probably going to sell my surface drive and put an outboard on my 18x54 aluminum boat. Friend of a friend has a 60hp Tohatsu for sale. He added a Yamaha trim switch to the tiller handle and a hydrofoil from Circle S Machine. It's a 2022 model with around 50hrs, and 2.5 yrs of warranty left. He's asking 6500.

I don't know much about Tohatsu other than I've heard they do manufacture motors for other companies in the game, and are getting popular with duck hunter up in Arkansas.

Any if you know the good bad, or ugly about em??

I think many of them are the same as Honda motors. Maybe the larger sizes.

My Dad has had a Tohatsu 40 since 2017. He's never had any trouble with it. I have a few buddies with them and I've never heard them say anything bad about them.

They are great motors. Tohatsu makes Mercury's small engines.

I am not sure about a connection to Honda outboards.

I had a 2020 Tohatsu 40HP with all the bells and whistles on my 16x48. I loved that fricking motor. No issues in the 3-1/2 years I had it. I ended up selling the boat due to not being able to use it as much as I'd like.

Good motors from what I've seen. Small issues and they run like a mofo. We call our duck boat the "Drug Runner". I've got a 9.8 on a 14' john for puddling around small lakes. Runs like the old 15hp from Johnson/Evinrude/Mercury's.

Historically they have made many of the smaller outboards or multiple manufacturers. The only significant downside with them, as well as Honda has typically been a lack of local dealers for parts and service depending on your location that may or may not be an issue at all.

60hp Tohatsu

I had a Tohatsu tiller 60 on my duck boat, although much older than the one you are looking at. Mine was a 95 model. It was a great motor. No issues and since I was living in Monroe then, I had access to a local dealer/service at EK's Marine in West Monroe.

I did a bunch of research when building my boat. I would get a Tohatsu hands down.

That being said the motor weight jumps up at the 70hp mark and I found a lightly used 70hp yam, which is lighter for a steal.

I have that exact motor and it’s a tank. Will piss mud and never miss a beat. Not as fast as a merc but very dependable.

I grew up on the coast in south texas and never heard of Tohatsu until I moved to SWLA in the 90s. On any day in March that's almost all you'll see in the Lacassine Pool and that's all I know about them. Dem baws love them some Tohatsus.

I use them on my catfish seining boats. They get abused badly by a bunch of 9 dollar an hour imbeciles and rarely give us trouble. I had Yamahas that wouldn’t last a month.

Solid quality motors

As noted in my annoying Gatortail thread I am no boat expert but my best friend is the definition of river rat and swamp monster. He has a Tohatsu (I think 40 or 50)on an open xpress with a middle bench compartment a 16/52 (IIRC) hull and that boat is fast and we have pulled some pretty big cypress out of the river with it with no problem.

He has had it for a few years and has some older Mercurys and other engines he has used before and he swears by the Tohatsu, fwiw. He is the type that would be right at home with y'all knowledgable boat folks on here so I just thought I would throw that out there if you were on the fence. To each their own but it is a great motor, that one at least.

Best small outboards made today in my opinion have had 4 and the only issue so far is the key cover doesn’t last very long.

Coming in late, I have a tohatsu 60 and I've had it for 4 years now.

I don't have anything to compare it with as it's my first boat, but here's my take.

1. The fuel pump is very weak. This made the break in period awful for me because it felt like the engine kept dying. In reality, with the way the fuel line and ant-siphon was set up, the engine was just starving.
2. Parts and diagrams are hard to find. I don't know if this is global for all manufacturers.
3. Service is really hard to find. The guy I take it to in Harahan is awesome but always busy as hell.
4. Combining 3 + 2 means it's hard to service DIY.

All that said, again, I have nothing to compare it to. But I keep it maintained and it runs fine all the time. It's really fuel efficient too. I don't care about hole shot, so I go with the 17' diameter prop and I can cruise at about 37mph with it.

Hope that all helps.

I had a 1990 40HP Tohatsu for over 20 years. Great engines. Tohatsu was the oldest marine engine manufacturer in Japan but they were bought out by Nissan about the time of that engine I had. Smaller engines were Tohatsu's, the large engines were made by Nissan.

That was a two stroke, though.

That seems like a good price but I don't know what they go for new anymore. I would not hesitate to have another Tohatsu.
