If you got rid of one thing a day would it put a dent in your belongings?

I've got too much shite around the house. If I got rid of one more thing than I added each day, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even notice by the end of the year. I'm talking about anything, such as pens and notepads to books, old souvenirs, extra lawn tools, etc... I'm thinking about leaving town for a weekend and hiring a close friend or relative to come into my house and throw shite away.
I'm not even including food items in this as that is a whole nother problem. How many of you hoarders here need to get rid of crap?

I am definitely with you on this. I am constantly getting rid of stuff all the time. I am the opposite of a hoarder.

You live in the desert, just dig a hole.

I’m a pack rat. I need all this shite for various things.

We have a want vs need problem. Most things we have because we want them, not because we need them.
One thing I started doing a few years ago is I turn all of the hangers in my closet backwards. When I wear something, wash it, and put it back, I put the hanger in forwards (like normal). After six months or a year I throw away or donate any clothes on hangers that haven't been turned around.
It has reduced my wardrobe of shite I don't, and won't, ever wear without having to think about it too much.

Every time I get rid of something and open up closet or floor space my wife thinks that means it's time to put oversized antique furniture in its place.

At one time I let my DIL overhaul my kitchen and I did not interfere. Completed in one day, cabinets cleaned out, and she had a pile for garage sale and a pile for a run to the dump. I brought it all to the dump.
Recently a sinks GF did the same for me 8 years later. More stuff went to the dump. I am grateful if someone starts on my garage next. It’s hard for me to toss stuff I have kept over the years.

It’s really hard to give things up Rick. You should know better than anyone.

I would, with my stuff.
I saw something online where you hide something in someone's house and see how long it takes for them to notice. I casually mentioned that to my MIL. And didn't think anything of it.
Next time she visited. Within a day I found d like three random things in my kitchen cabinet.
I'm the queen of throwing things out.

I did that once to a friend. They didn't appreciate the ferret that took up living in their couch and kept stealing their car keys.

I could remove one thing from all the shite my wife has accumulated over 50 years for the next 50 years and she’s never be the wiser of it. She just bought a new pair of shoes with shamrocks on them for next week. What’s wrong with the other 10 pair she owns. If I got rid of my stuff, I’d eventually be walking around naked. She’d still have shamrock shoes to wear. But I do love her!

Nobody is making me throw away my Highlights magazines. Nobody. It took me dozens of years of stealing from every doctor’s office in Louisiana. I guess you could say I’m more Goofus than Gallant.

We aren't hoarders or anything, but my wife and I have been cleaning out the house one room at a time. We've thrown so much shite away in the past month or two that I bet the garbage people hate us right now.
I prefer the minimalist style. We very well could downsize our house in a few years when all of the kids are gone so we need less stuff.

I have been getting rid of stuff for two months and I can't any difference.

I heard a story of someone making a photoshop of one of those picture frame quotes and sticking the photoshop copy into the frame and the homeowner not noticing for 3+ years. Even after the homeowner commented that the quotes do have meaning to them and are not simply decor. I wish I remember what they replaced the text with, but it was both pretty funny and made me go and double check all the pictures we have on the walls.
I'm talking about one of these type of quotes that are framed:

If there is one thing I miss about renting and moving every 1 to 2 years, it would have to be that we were somewhat minimalist. My wife and I rented three different places before buying a home. We really didn't collect much junk during that time since we were moving enough to throw stuff out and stay fairly lean. We've been in our first home for five years now and it's pretty insane seeing what we've collected during that time.

I need to give this a try. Thanks for sharing.

Funny you should mention this.
We moved twenty years ago. I went in the attic today and started throwing all that has not been touched in two decades.
I hit Goodwill, dumpster, and give my son FB Marketplace items.

I'm starting to be around friends who have parents dying. They're burdened by all the shite they have to go through.
For your kids' sake...stop consuming so much, and throw out what you have.

We have WAY too much shite- me included. When we moved 16 years ago, our movers said we had 2500 sf of furniture in a 1300 sf house. We moved into a 2500sf house and have kept adding, and adding, and adding.
I remember thinking ‘what are we going to put in all these cabinets?’ now I think ‘where the hell are we going to put this?’
Our oldest is headed to college in 2 years, so he’ll take some of this stuff off our hands, right?
