From what I understand, getting the Ranger tab is not the same as "being" a Ranger. I have heard Rangers explain it but I guess what they are trying to say is that people who serve in the Ranger regiments did a lot more than just getting the tab.

Correct I was tabbed not scrolled. Which means I was technical "Ranger Qualified". In my unit (82nd) there were lots of tabbed Rangers and they were generally referred to as simply Rangers but everyone knew it meant they were Ranger Qualified. On the opposite end, you have non-Ranger Qualified soldiers serving in Ranger regiments, it has become more rare especially now that they are used in more direct action than in the past but it does exist.

If it’s the Seals they will have written 5 books and made 3 movies about what they ate for breakfast

Once witnessed most of a seal team having their faces drug across non-skid. Seals were relocated to a different ship after that. Semper fricking fi.
That sounds fricking hilarious.

Question for the OT military folks. I’m interested in hearing stories about the most intense military training in the world, the Navy Seals BUDS training. Those of you who participated in this, or know someone who did, what was it really like? What was Hell Week like?
Someone has never heard of the Q Course, Selection, Ranger School or USMC IOC! My suggestion is don’t listen to propaganda and for those that want to know The Unit is better than ST6.

The couple of people I've met that went to BUDS wouldn't really talk about it. They would just acknowledge they went and did some training then change the subject.
Then they weren’t SEALs

Drownproofing and the cold cause more people to drop than hell week.
Per people I have known.
Also if you can’t easily pass the physical Qual test - don’t bother.
Pretty well know retired guys one in mandeville the other in NO
One was an instructor and one was on bin Laden raid - they are t to hard to find

Marine sure, but I highly doubt any unit guy ever gave going to buds a thought. When you’ve already made it to the show, why go back to triple A ball?

The instructors themselves would tell if you can’t handle it mentally you won’t be able to handle it physically. I guess take it up with them.

His point was that it’s not just mental, it’s also physical. You have to be not just in great shape but phenomenal physical shape and phenomenal mental shape. Most of the guys that are the most mentally strong, go in being in phenomenal physical shape also because they know they need to be to excel. But there’s guys that are in phenomenal physical shape that don’t have it mentally.
But if you are barely qualifying physically, it’s going to be a hell of a hard time to make it mentally

The movie American Sniper about Chris Kyle is one of my favorite movies. It shows some of the SEAL training he went through. That dude is fighting alongside St. Michael, I'm certain!

Agreed. There's lots of good/hard training throughout the DoD (add Marine Raiders to this pointless discussion). I had the pleasure of serving with a lot of them at SOCOM. The vast majority are humble, great people who are a blast to work with.

I think a Salvation Army Operator (SAOs) is up there in prestige.

Becoming a SEAL begins with signing a non-Navy Special Warfare contract and entering the delayed entry program. During DEP you have a chance to meet at a specific location once a week to take a physical screening test. The Baton Rouge area uses the LSU natatorium. Best 500 meter swim time, max push, pull, sit, and then best 1.5 mile time. If the candidate can consistently meet requirements for 4-6 months they will be offered a NSW contract. SEAL, SWCC, EOD, Diver, or AIRR. During bootcamp, these candidates used to be separated into 800 divisions and attend an extra work out every morning known as "dive motivators", or DIVEMO. Too many people were butt hurt by the 800 division separation and the Navy did away with that because or military leadership is made up of total pussies. After bootcamp, SEAL, EOD, Diver and SWCC candidates head across the street from Navy bootcamp to Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) for BUDS prep. AIRR candidates head to Pensacola for aircrew school and then rescue swimmer school. Candidates spend about 2 months here before heading to Miami or Coronado.
Some highlights from BUDS phase 1: Cellulitis, disappearing heal skin, broken backs from boats on heads, broken and dislocated hips, shitting and pissing your pants in the surf, sand in your pants, 2-3 hours of sleep/day, and hypothermia.
Keep in mind that BUDS phase 1 is 9 weeks long but BUDS phase 1, 2, and 3 combined are about 2 years long.
