Why are graduating seniors required to check this drop off of the to do list?
We don’t qualify for federal funding of college and it didn’t sit right with me in sharing financials.

The idea is for families to complete the application and at least find out what kinds/how much money is available to them if they wanted to go to college. It is also one of the requirements for students to receive TOPS.
For anyone who doesn’t want to do it, there is a separate TOPS-only application or they can do a waiver through the district and still satisfy the graduation requirement.

If it makes you feel any better, you can be assured they know about all of that already.

You don't qualify for Pell or other grants, but you qualify for student loans. There's a large segment that doesn't qualify for grants, but may wish to utilize student loans. I agree though, if you're going to decline the loans, then you shouldn't have to bother doing the fafsa in the first place.

They ask how much you have in savings, does anyone answer that honestly?

I hate to break it to you but if you file taxes the federal government already knows how much money you make

Because your friends in the LA Legislature thought it would encourage more kids to go to college.
Because they thought the problems in our state can be solved by having even more marginal students go to school, get grants, then drop out after two semesters

This is what we did. Didn’t qualify for anything, but used student loans to help smooth out cash flow a bit.

You do it for loans and scholarships.
You never know what you might qualify for.

My mom submitted that on my behalf. I didn’t even know it was a thing. Instead of ending up in Afghanistan I ended up with a degree from LSU.

I know I had to sign up when I was 18, but I thought I read they got rid of that requirement a couple of years ago?
