Genuine question to the OT gear heads. What exactly do these things do and how much of a priority are they in a vehicle? My suv kept throwing up maintenance code after code till I finally replace the thing for damn near $50. Are cabin air filters a ripoff or are they essential to a car?

Mine is 7 years old and if it's causing problems I'm not aware of it

They actually do play a role. I think the standard cheap ones are just about as effective as the more expensive ones.

If you want to be cheap, just clean out the old air filter and put it back.

Do you have a filter on the a/c at your house….

Cabin filter is the air filter for you car A/C

Just like in you house, if clogged if will cut down on cooling capacity

I recommend following the maintenance guidance in the owner's manual.

I worked out in California for around a year and while there a family of baby mice died in my cars cabin filter.

I think it’s good to change the cabin air filter every few years. I changed mine last year and it had leaves, pine straw and other crap in it. The cabin air filter can sometimes be the culprit if your A/C isn’t blowing air hard enough.

Yes you should change it out every so often but you should do it yourself.

The cabin air filter is probably the easiest thing you can change out on a car and it's a hell of a lot cheaper to do than what a Quick Lube will charge.

Critical. It's a drastic help in the south with all the oak tree pollen and dust and shite. I keep mine changed. It's a 5 minute job with most vehicles

a clogged filter can cause a/c systems to prematurely fail. Change the damn thing according to driving conditions/timely.

Necessity

Yes. You can buy one for $40 or less and replace it yourself once a year. Will keep your AC running better.

If I don't change mine in the F150 once a year, the a/c smells like arse at startup.

My local Ford dealership maintenance dept will tell you it needs to be replaced, even though you just replaced it a week ago... just sayin'
