MSNBC guest says 1st ammendment makes US vulnerable, calls for common sense restrictions

MSNBC legal analyst Barbara McQuade argued Monday that the United States’ “deep commitment to free speech” makes Americans uniquely susceptible to disinformation campaigns. McQuade, a University of Michigan law professor, went on “The Rachel Maddow Show” to promote her new book
She added, “I hope that by dissecting it, explaining it, and educating the public, we can all see disinformation for what it is so that we can begin to push back against it. So, for example, our deep commitment to free speech in our First Amendment. It is a cherished right. It’s an important right in democracy, and nobody wants to get rid of it, but it makes us vulnerable to claims [that] anything we want to do related to speech is censorship.” She argued, “Of course, the Supreme Court has held that all fundamental rights, even the right to free speech, can be limited as long as there is a compelling governmental interest and the restriction is narrowly tailored to achieve that interest. But I think any time someone tries to do anything that might limit free speech, people claim censorship.”
We need to have a conversation and common-sense solutions to these things,” she said. “Instead, we throw out terms like ‘censorship,’ call each other names, use labels and retreat to our opposite sides. We need to be pragmatic and come up with real solutions.”
And you'll never guess the totally unironic name of her book...
Look, you just need to give up some of your rights for common sense restrictions that aid the greater good of society.

It's hilarious that people can't grasp why most of us don't trust our government enough to surrender one inch more.

“It’s just an amendment.. it’s for the greater good overall.. trust us.. we know what’s best for you .”
This is evil . Straight up.

I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

I’m for executing people that push this rhetoric. IF there wasn’t a first amendment.

I like how wokeness used the first amendment to gain absolute power..and now want the first amendment abolished, because they are terrified that others will use the first amendment to gain power.

Not a single one of these loons would accept a Trump administration enacting those restrictions.

These lunatics: "We need to educate the public on what is or isn't disinformation."
Also these lunatics: "Only WE know what the disinformation looks like. You really shouldn't be thinking on your own."
Any one from either side of the isle should be immediately ignored if they start telling they know the truth about anything. If a politician or media members says the sky is blue you better check out the window.

They would love to see their version of the Reichstag Fire Decree and Enabling Act enacted in America.

Let me give you a bit of a different perspective. I know this board likes to trade in back and forth one upmanship but this is seriously something to think about.
The country I live in when in Europe is next door to Russia and has a population of 1.5 million.
Because of the oppression of free speech during USSR days the parliament passed laws that were so free speech, you might even think they were borderline crazy, like Porn allowed in the middle of the day on TV type stuff.
That was until about 10 years ago when the nation started to get bombarded, and I do mean it, hammered, pounded, assaulted, by Russian intelligence agents on social media. Even the most minor thing "Aspirin Prices to rise by five cents according to biggest pharmacy in town" was a reason to get four thousand posts slamming the country.
It clearly was not organic (real) posting. It was mostly paid propogandists and the first we saw of Artificial Intelligence type posting.
Then it expanded to the fact that you couldn't call any radio station because the radio's were getting calls from obvious robots (you would pick up the phone and a robot voice would just count up numbers, one, two, three, etc. creepy as hell). Newspaper sites were filled up so much that they couldn't take the bandwith and had to close (they found a way around it eventually but it took a while).
Point being, while we talk about Russia a lot on here (as we should they are a danger and a threat) I do not think anyone is considering what will happen if China decides to spend two billion dollars to frick up our internet. Imagine if all comments on twitter, youtube and even this message board were totally swamped with anti-Ameircan pro-China stuff.
Again, this is probably impossible for the average American to fathom, but if you are from a tiny country like I am, I am here to tell your - watch out.
Total free speech? Good in theory, in fact 100 percent I agree in theory, but be careful about what you wish for.

Of course
Leftists cant handle dissent. This is why they kill all the smart people when they seize the means of production.
All these nerds that believe these dweebs are on their side are in for a shock.

It's amazing how the left believes government is the solution to anything.
More amazing is expecting any "common sense" from the federal government.

frick that. Hearing dissenting opinions will not hurt anyone.
Same reasoning we used for the patriot act. Scare people into thinking liberty is a negative.

For those that have Twitter, you should @BarbMcQuade and ask her if Joe Bidens "Trump doesn't know his wife's name" post from this morning is type of election related misinformation that needs to be controlled or if that's (D)ifferent

Meek, timid, incapable people need collectivism to thrive.
We paused natural selection, unfortunately. Most would not have survived to adulthood.

Give an inch. Then they want another. Then a foot. Then you’re full commie.

I wonder who determines misinformation? Our founders are rolling over in their graves.

Somehow, its only a common sense restriction when they are restricting the right
