An up-and-down offense
Coach Jay Johnson was not pleased with LSU’s offense after Saturday’s 5-2 win over Northern Illinois, sharing his displeasure with the Tigers’ positional players for 20 minutes following the game.
Johnson had a right to be displeased. LSU had just three hits in its win over the Huskies. It failed to record an extra-base hit the day before in its first loss of the season to Stony Brook.
The Tigers were impatient and failed to stick to a plan at the plate in both games. On Saturday, 11 of the 27 outs the Huskies recorded came on at-bats where they needed no more than two pitches to record the out.

Emerging right-handed relief options
Sunday was a rough day for the bullpen, but the unit was excellent during the prior three games of the series.
This is particularly true when it comes to LSU's right-handed relievers.
Ulloa, Guidry, and Dutton are the RHPs to be relied on right now. Moffett is coming along nicely though.
They needed to test Little on a back-to-back yesterday. It didn't work out, but he also didn't walk anyone. His two prior outings were just fine.
Likewise with Bucknam, he was great in his first outing but they needed to see him again on the same weekend to test him a little bit. It didn't work out, but it doesn't mean he won't contribute again
.
Overall, we're only stranding 58% of inherited runners though. That's what really needs to improve. No single guy is the main culprit, and similarly no particular guy has had enough chances to be the standout. It's still early, but in the aggregate we need to get better there.f

An up-and-down offense
Was always going to be the case after losing so many big bats off of last year's team.
Pitching and defense will be what carries this team in the SEC games, and I think we have the staff to win a lot of SEC series like that.
The offense is going to have it's moments, and I think it will continue to improve as the season progresses, but pitching will be the calling card of this team.

My biggest ask today is that Brady Neal get his throwing hand behind his calf. Everything else I feel is already on track to working itself out actually ahead of schedule honestly

I think there is a lot of guys that are very up and down in the bullpen. I can see there being a lot of instances in SEC play, where there will be two guys warming up and there will be a very short leash. If he lets a guy or two on, they'll say try again tomorrow.

Hurd to the pen gives you another RHP in the pen too. Holman, Coleman, Jump as the weekend starters.

I wonder if Jay makes a move this week to start Holman against Texas

Hurd is not going to the pen after the 2nd weekend of the season. Plus Jump is not ready to be a everyday starter just yet.

Deep staff but you do hope for more RHP. I don’t think Dutton or Bucknam are it. Need Moffett to be something. Ulloa looks great

My 5 takeaways:
1. I like Luke Holman, hopefully he's our Friday night starter
2. I am excited to see more of Milam, he's a gamer
3. We have deep pitching depth that will continue to develop
4. We are a much better hitting team when we are more patient and are seeing more pitches
5. I trust Coach Johnson to get us prepared for another run!

Another takeaway I got was Kling's nice weekend at the plate. After a slow start last week, he has his avg. up to .400, leads the team in OBP, and has very patient at-bats. He is your ideal leadoff hitter with how he approaches every at bat.
Hopefully he makes that same impact during conference.

That's why he's on Sunday where you ideally have bullpen arms ready and don't have to worry about saving them for another game.

quote:To get to where we want to go, Thatcher will have to take us like he did last year. I don’t know if it’s a confidence thing or Yeskie tinkering with things mechanically that he’s not fully comfortable with yet, but either way we need to stick with him and let him figure it out.
Hurd to the pen gives you another RHP in the pen too. Holman, Coleman, Jump as the weekend starters.
We aren’t national champions without Thatcher Hurd and that’s pretty undebatable.

Time for Moneyball.
It's time for us to start acquiring financially undervalued players on an open market?
That's going to be tough since players aren't valued financially and all avenues of player procurement are closed until the season is over. And again, when those avenues are open the market is not a financial one.

Where does Anderson fit in ?

My guess is he starts Wednesday. From there, I could see him going to a weekend bullpen role (until getting another stat against North Dakota State) with Coleman moving to weekday starts.
He would join Herring and Ack as multi inning relievers to extend if any of the three weekend starters (Hurd, Holman, Jump) don't go as long as needed.
They really want to keep Coleman on a starter schedule for health reasons. And there is some benefit to having him there if he can consistently get 4-5 innings a start.

What year are you talking?
I would not give up on this team if for some reason Thatcher gets injured and cannot pitch.
There are a lot of pieces that have to come together for us to repeat but it can happen.

I'm going to throw Jared Jones a bone too. He came into this season as the Rant Whipping Boy and he's been steadily improving his game offensively and defensively. It's still way too early to tell until we see some top level pitching, but he has clearly made some adjustments at the plate. He is laying off of bad breaking balls, working the count in his favor, and swinging with some confidence. The Bear is off to a great start.

I’d settle for him being an every week starter.
