Regarding that grand old architecture, my mother always says "God is in the details."

And modern architecture is a godless monstrosity.

Because it's about saving costs and making sure buildings are built to code based on massive government regulations.

Look at most of America beyond a downtown area and you'll have your answer. Suburban aesthetics gone awry.

Yer welcome to throw your designs out there and be the change you'd like to see. I agree with you about older architecture generally being more attractive, but I don't consider the examples you posted to be good examples for "bland" architecture. Bland is a steel building with a vinyl banner for a sign. Those are subdued, minimalist designs because that's what people like and it's probably quick, cheap and easy to build.

Because of cost. Materials are more expensive, there's more regulation than ever, labor is expensive and everything is about timelines.

If you can build it a little shittier but open 2 months earlier then business owners don't hesitate

Maybe just replace “human” with “American”

Bc no cares to put time, money, energy in designing fast food restaurants. Focus on the stadiums being built around the country and you will have a different perspective

There’s a lot of classic American excitement in your examples. You can see our optimism in those restaurants.

After WW2 we stopped using beauty as a principle in design, and embraced ugliness. I’m guessing this is connected. Most modern designs are visibly oppressive and appear designed to depress everyone who has the misfortune of being in and around them. These buildings don’t inspire any positive emotions. They put you on edge instead.

Brutalist architecture is meant to make you feel small and inadequate to the state.

It’s why a lot of govt buildings from the 50-80s have that shite sore style.

Brutalist. Not even once.

Because they don't want you hanging around. The last couple of brand new Chick-fil-A stores I've seen are drive thru/walk up only. No seating inside at all.

Not only are materials more expensive there is a lack of skilled laborers that can execute more detailed projects. The guy that is expected to build the Taco Bell these days was literally flipping burgers in the McDonalds yesterday.

A lot of commercial architecture these days seems very focused on awnings, and I fricking hate awnings. They're cheap, flimsy visual trickery, and zoning policy should restrict them more tightly.

Architecture isn’t necessarily bland today. Just certain segments.

Back in the day, fast food restaurants designed with marketing in mind. it was an inviting night out and needed to grab attention.

With TV, social media, brand recognition, fast food doesn’t need to do this anymore. They need to be efficient as possible and put up as many locations as possible.

Different industries design differently. Plenty of cool buildings going up in my neighborhood. Even the new bars are doing some cool shite…bc they need to market their space with a cool design and inviting atmosphere

its because youve chosen mega corporations rather than mom and pops, which unfortunately is the norm now. McDonalds, BK, CFA, Taco Bell are just like starter home neighborhoods. To save costs and ensure the brand, they offer only a couple of design options.

I dont have anything against these corporations for doing this. It's probably smart business. Customers will mostly choose lower prices and consistent products over the opposite.

But given the option, I try to shop at local places like hardware stores. You cant replace the old guys working there to give you actual advice.

I miss art deco. We really lost out in not keeping that style going throughout the last century
