Divorce Board Spin-Off: If you have been married, why did you get married?

With the rash of divorce threads as of late, I'm genuinely curious for the married folk why you got married. Looking back, do you think it was for the right reasons?
And for the successfully married OTers, what do you feel like has made your marriage last?

men get married cause their brains stop working when they have feelings for a woman

I am ugly, and it was the only way for me to get laid.

I think a good chunk of them, 30-50% either get married because it was "time" meaning late 20's early 30's. Or, they just wanted kids.
Terrible move if that's the reason.

We value each other and wanted to get married, didn't have any hesitation.

Why in the hell do you think people get married for?

Other than love, I got her pregnant in HS. Joined the military for insurance and stability, made it a career and now we’re retired and starting our second lives together.

All kinds of reasons. I'm just curious what the general consensus is here.
I've seen people get married because their girlfriend got pregnant. Or because they felt obligated to do so from family pressure. I've also seen people get married because they just genuinely wanted to marry the person they were with.

1) My wife and I waited until we were married before having sex. So I wanted to get married.
2) We wanted to commit to each other that we would faithful and loyal to each other.
3) Wanted to start a family and can’t do that without sex. Kids are built in friends.
4) I genuinely love and admire my wife. I wanted to live and be with her full time.
Yes, I think we did it for the right reasons.

I got married because I finally found a hot chick that shared my values and thought I was hot, too. The perfect storm.
What has made our marriage last? Trying to keep Christ at the center. Haven't always succeeded, and there have been struggles, but working through them made our marriage better. It does get easier.

Silly me, I thought it was love.
Spoiler alert…The whole thing was fraudulent, but he got his permanent green card.
I still look for his story, which is full of murder and intrigue, to hit dateline or 48 hours. He did not murder anybody, but was somewhat involved in a case that was pretty big news in Kentucky. You live and you learn, I guess.

Been married 11 years. Find a girl that isn't a POS and comes from a good stable family. My wife is awesome. Understands I have hobbies that I am going to do no matter what. Helps her dad loves to hunt and fish and did it while she was a kid so she gets it.
Marrying a women with family issues that expects you not to do the things you love would be a major mistake.

I was waiting for marriage to have sex because of the fear mongering of my parents and my church. I had little experience with girls and little vision for my life. My now-wife became my girlfriend when I was 20, and I proposed as soon as I graduated from college.
It took a lot of unfricking of my retarded brain to build a respectable life as a man, and fortunately, my marriage was something I chose to keep as my wife grew as I did.
No where near perfect yet, but my story of getting married is a direct representation of how immature I was.

I was 20 and my wife was 19 when we got married. We were both in college. Sounds kind of silly, but we knew we wanted to spend our lives together and thought, “why not start now”? I knew she was going to be my wife, so why wait?
Well, I guess the jury is still out on “successful” since we’re only 23 years in and the plan is to grow old together
If I had to put it on one thing, it’s communication. Like really talk about everything. No matter how trivial. Even if it’s repetitive. Sometimes we’ll have the same discussion repeatedly for months or even years…then I realized that it’s not the same discussion. It changes subtly over time because we’re changing. Sometimes we literally reverse positions on a topic.
I think by doing that, and working to understand each other we change in the same direction if that makes sense. We avoid drifting away from each other.
