Uh Oh... Some want New Orleans Public Schools to take back directly running schools

For the uninformed... all New Orleans public schools are charters. The school board basically oversees the charters, owns most of the buildings and land (a few charters built their own buildings) and handle collecting revenue and paying the charters to run the schools.
LINK
Who in the world is telling this person that? The schools are currently the best they have been in 50 years. They are FAR from perfect... but the vast majority are well run, and when they aren't well run, the charter operator gets fired.
You will never fix the accountability of parents, but you have fixed the accountability of the schools and school administrators.
And the schools are doing a better job of managing money. It's been cool to see the number of charter middle schools and charter middle/high schools, and even a few charter elementary schools, put together bands and march in oarades. That never happened before.
So, what kind of people actually think this?
Unless you are a fan of corruption and incompetence, no one in their right mind should want to go back to where we used to be.
This is insane. Charter schools are one of the very few things NOLA has going for it right now.

Nothing will help. It doesn't matter how you run the schools. I feel horrible for the kids that actually want to be there because they almost have no chance.

I'm not doubting you but is there data to show that the New Orleans public schools (charter schools) are the best they have been?
I've always been frustrated by the education system there and would love to see data showing things are improving.

Orleans Parish schools were nearly taken over by the state in 2005.
Katrina happening allowed them to rebuild the system in a way that wouldn’t have otherwise happened, as there would have been no way to go full parish charter without an Act Of God destroying the city.

Right now overall Orleans Parish schools are rated a "C"
That's made up of an "F" in overall scores, but an "A" in score progress improvement.
School Performance Score (SPS) was a 69.8. State average was 78.5.
In 2004, the year before Katrina, the old system was three stars, two stars, one star, or academic warning.
Orleans was one of two districts under academic warning. Their SPS was a 51.2, state average was 82.6.
So the parish relative to the state has gone from -31.4 to -8.7.

I'm old enough to remember the days prior to the charter schools and it was an absolute shite show. There used to be a public access channel on Cox in New Orleans (Ch 08?) that used to televise their meetings and it was a circus.

Sandra "18-Wheeler" Hester
Would act like an absolute fool at every meeting.

Take SPS reported by charters (and any school, really) with a huge grain of salt. The corruption in reporting is disgustingly rampant. It is all a shell game. Many schools scores go up because they force very student to take dual enrollment and AP courses, tweak this program or that, and voila, improved SPS. Doesn't matter if they pass; The school system still gets the points. EBR does this at every high school, while forcing middle school kids to take HS credit classes (many of which are not worth taking).

Plot twist. They ARE fans of corruption and incompetence as evidenced by what happens every time they get to vote.

I seriously have no idea. All I do know is I am moving to Northshore if my kids don’t get into Willow (formerly Lusher), Audubon, or Hynes.

Two problems can arise with charter schools. One is that when they are poorly run, then it’s an absolute disaster.
The other is that a lot of money flows through the charter system. Anytime there’s a mix of politics, non-profits, and money then it will attract a lot of grifters.
Both can be largely prevented by competent oversight. The charter concept is great, but it’s still New Orleans. The best they can do is separate and educate the kids that show up and put forth at least a little effort.

So that's what the proponents of moving away from charter schools want to "move back to"?
I can only guess that they are either uneducated on that level or progress or else are counting on the rest of the public being uneducated on it. Oh, irony...

That is a STRETCH, but yes I believe the data shows they are doing better now than pre-Katrina.

Whatever happened to Sandra 18 Wheeler Hester? The Hester Report was required Sunday night viewing when I lived there before Katrina. You never knew what she was going to say or do.
