re: Does this season change your view of Coach MM regardless of how this season finishe

How he finishes definitely still matters. The reason I feel ok about MM at this point is because the team has improved from last year and is continuously improving throughout this season. If we were to go 1-4 in our last 5 games that would somewhat undo that improvement.

I think what's gonna hold us back will always be recruiting. We need to hire someone to help out with recruiting.
The guy had a top 20 class his first year on the job with significant roster turnover and a lot of uncertainty looming. The guys that stuck around he's recruited so far have been solid contributors this season (Reed,Ward, and Williams). He also has 2 top 75 players nationally coming next year. I have a hard time understanding how people think he can't recruit?

I mean if he loses out all this good will would go to shite lol.
But they won't do that, hopefully this week was us getting the gears unstuck and we can finally start rolling. Have to keep improving though, next year could be a big year for him and tProgram

He still can’t recruit and is 6-7 in the SEC. After last night you’d think we’re a projected 3 seed in the tournament. Friendly reminder the coach 2 hours west won the SEC in year 2 and don’t care about the excuses of what MM was left with

I think that group of JC rejects Brady had to cobble together in his first year were just as bad or worse than Hill.

No, Wade is better overall. He’s had some upsets this year, but that’s not the end all be all. He has to get better each year. At the same time look at McNeese.
Wade may be a better coach, and McNeese has done very well under Wade, but they are hugely overrated at 64th on Kenpom. Their signature win was against Michigan that is 105th on Kenpom. That was still impressive, but not nearly as impressive as what LSU has done. Nichols barely beat by 2 points at home against Lafayette that is 309th on Kenpom. They lost to Southeastern Louisiana by 3 and they are 274th. The best team they've played this year is Louisiana Tech which is 81st, and Nichols lost to Louisiana Tech by 9. They lost to Western Carolina by 2, and they are 128th. They just beat Texas CC by 6 points, and they are 187th. If they make the NCAAT, they will get crushed. I know LSU lost to Nichols which is 273rd, but LSU is way better than they were earlier in the year, whereas if you look at McNeese, I don't see improvement. So the best team that McNeese has beaten is Michigan at 105th; whereas LSU has now beaten the 21st Wake Forest, 23rd Kentucky, 52nd Texas A&M, 55th USCe, 70th Miss, and 74th North Texas teams. Besides the crushing loss to Nichols, LSU's big losses to Syracuse 85th and Kansas St 72nd came before their big improvements. Any team can have an awful day in basketball, so that loss shouldn't bury LSU. Also, I think LSU would beat Syracuse and Kansas St today. I think LSU should be rated around 50th in Kenpom and deserve to make the NCAAT, whereas I think McNeese should be rated around 100. That's still great for McNeese, so I respect the job Wade has done, but that doesn't take away from CMM.

Yes and anyone who isn't encouraged by the growth of the players and team under Mcmahon decided not to like him long ago and doesn't want to change their mind.

Go ahead and double-down on the clown takes. We are just getting started.

KenPom is just data. There is no subjectivity to the ratings. So it's impossible to be overrated or underrated in those rankings.

Again. It's just data. LSU's ranking on there is what the data shows. It's not Ken Pomeroy sitting in his house deciding he, personally, doesn't think LSU is a good as you might think they are
Now, you can use that data to filter out teams who may be overrated or underrated in subjective rankings (i.e. top 25 polls). South Carolina might be one of those teams. It's why LSU was a larger underdog vs. Florida than South Carolina...despite South Carolina having a better record and higher ranking.

I do not know enough about collegiate basketball to make a decision of how good/bad MM may be. However, as a casual fan, his players play hard, and never give up.

Beating #5 Tennessee in 2019 was maybe the only time. You’d be surprised with how poorly the conference was ranked before this year. Maybe one or two ranked teams in total, and then we we’re often playing there instead of here.

I'd also add that while its not at the level that the last coach who shall remain unnamed had it, it is trending up.

The algorithm has flaws which has resulted in overrating some and underrating others. I don’t think Kenpom weighs recent games more than early season games, or if it does, it is insufficient. This is particularly important as players get and lose eligibility, making the rosters different.

IMO he has shown improvement, but they MUST finish strong with this momentum to make me believe that he is going to bring us places.
Posted on 2/22/24 at 1:54 pm to LSUSlidell23
Of course it does, and anyone with any sense would agree the outlook moving forward is better today than it was back in November. But regardless, year 3 was always going to be when the bar would get raised results wise.

I agree. And a question for basketball fans who know more than most on this board, myself included. Which team is more talented? If it's Kentucky then coach McMahon out coached Calapari. ?

Not really because next year has always been the money year. It is reassuring that the team finally seems to have come together and has some incredible back to back wins. If LSU doesn't make the NCAAT in year 3, I think he's gone.
The two wins have finally generated some excitement this season (winning cures all), still need to finish strong and have a good showing at the NIT.
LSU should safely be in the NIT with the new rules where they take the top 2 NET ranked teams from the major conferences that don't make the NCAAT.
