holy crap winds reached speeds of 265 mph.

2 passenger planes surpassed 800 mph on recent flights with strong winds. That's over 200 mph as fast as a typical plane ride.

On Saturday, two flights arrived at their destinations early.

A Virgin Atlantic flight from Washington, DC, to London landed 45 minutes ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey, arrived in Lisbon 20 minutes early.

The passengers have strong winds to thank for that.

High-altitude winds over the mid-Atlantic helped the planes surpass speeds of 800 mph, The Washington Post reported.

Guess we're waiting for the westbound planes to land to determine how slow their flights were

the planes had more gas upon landing than when they took off.

"good evening passengars thanks for flying Virgin. Although we are 45 minutes early, the gate is not yet prepared so we will be sitting on the ramp for 45 minutes but please stay in your seats with seatbelts fastened, no restrooms available either"

These planes aren't bolted together well enough for normal speeds much less 200MPH faster.

Recent flight from IAH to MSP was at least 30 minutes ahead of schedule since we were doing 750+ ground speed with a nice tailwind. Kept trying to think of the speed for Mach 1 (I’ve always thought 768 mph) since we were fairly close.

Took a flight from Atlanta to Copenhagen once. We got there about 1.5 hours early because of tailwinds. Because we got there so early, there was no one in customs to let us in. Some janitor just shrugged and waved us on in.

Yes, this was before 9/11.

I wasn’t on either of those flights but my flight definitely benefited from that jet stream on Sunday. I flew to Amsterdam from Atlanta for work and we arrived an hour earlier than scheduled. We were hauling arse.

At those speeds the planes practically produced jet fuel.

I took flights to CDG from Pittsburgh a couple of times. It was in a 757 - the only narrow body I’ve ever flown over the Atlantic. Delta retired the flight a few years later and I think BA picked up a flight to Heathrow on a Dreamliner since.

On days like that with a strong head wind on the return, I bet the trip back to CDG is next to impossible on that 757.

Always a welcome sight when you have had a long hitch offshore and you are ready to go home.

200+ mph tailwind, 800+ mph total and only 20 min early?

Guessing they had all kinds of fricking delays, late departure.
