kyle shanahan should be fired for not running CMC in the third on repeat. you want blame, there's your blame.
This is the correct answer. Shanahan has choked three SBs now for the same reason.
As for Wilks, his D was terrible most of the year. The SB, by far, was their best performance of the playoffs. The defense had that game won if Chokehan just runs the ball more.

Nobody to blame for the loss. Difference in game is simple. One team has mahomes the other doesn’t

LOL. Nope.
Shanahan would have lost with prime Brady or Montana at QB as well. People that keep saying this did not pay attention to the play calls in critical spots at all. This loss was not on Purdy. He did score his last three possessions and they should have had the ball last in regulation/OT. Chokehan fricked that up royally by calling two pass plays after getting six yards on a first down after the two minute warning. He is choke artist. Period.
You take three plays if you have to and get four yards on the ground, make KC use the TOs, and run out the clock. Simple. Done. End of game. Nope. He calls two passes after that then kicks a long FG.

WTF? I'm a long-time KC Chiefs fan, but dang that's some pretty harsh scapegoating.
Anyone who watched the game saw the 49er's D shut down KC's offense in the first half. I thought Bosa was going to tear Mahomes' head off on a couple of plays.
Second half? Yeah, the Chiefs did what they always do - they adjusted.
If anyone is to blame for the Niner's loss, it's Shanahan. Their offense stopped running and couldn't stay on the field - which played right into KC's strengths this year. After several series where the defense got virtually no rest because the offense didn't move the ball, KC just wore them out.
I thought after the game that the Niners had NO reason to hang their heads after that game. They gave KC all they could handle. It was a great game, but Shanahan is a bitch and shifted blame to his DC.
So, yeah, here's a l'il something for you Shanahan:

Damn there defense played very well in the super bowl and now he gets fired

The defense was also exhausted toward the end of the game. Romo and Nantz talked about it a couple times.
They also talked about how it seemed like Shannahan was talking to Wilks a lot; especially at the end. Maybe the issue with the fit was Shannahan started micromanaging during the SB, especially at the end, and him and Wilks had a heated meeting afterwards and this firing is more of a mutual thing.

quote:You’re missing a key metric - 1st in defensive talent
8th in total defense
14th in pass defense
3rd in rush defense
3rd in scoring defense
So does someone within the organization just randomly hate this dude or something? Seems like he'll get a job pretty quickly with those numbers.
He’s not being fired for the Super Bowl, so all of this scapegoat stuff is nonsense. He’s being fired because the defense under this regime has never been more talented and they still took a sizable step back from Saleh and Ryans. The number of games in which he was drastically outschemed and outadjusted were far too many and it got worse as the season went on as people figured him out. They got by on absurd talent. The Detroit gameplan and effort (he’s supposed to be a motivator) was a firable offense on its own. Plus his own position group (DBs) have been a huge liability all year
I was pleased with the defensive gameplan and most of the execution with 2 weeks to prepare against a limited offense. But the Niners were not going to remain a top 5 D with him running it. It’s a bold move on paper but this is a big relief for Niner fans

He held the Chiefs to ONE TD in regulation. Frick all that

I'd say they still underperformed with the talent on that defense, but Kyle is probably just trying to shift some blame here. If they win the SB, Wilks still has his job today.
They lost their defensive aggressiveness, even situationally.
Bend don't break to the point of dying by a thousand cuts.

And he gave up 24 points in a half at home to Detroit - a team loaded with players who had never come close to the limelight of a conference championship before - sitting in an extremely conservative base 4-3 that was more appropriate for a preseason game. The entire first half
Frick that even more. It was only going to get worse. The players can’t cover everything up indefinitely
When you compare him to a guy like Spags who has less talent but the superior defense…there is no comparison, it’s laughable
This was coming ever since the mid-year slide made clear he wasn’t going to meet the standard of his predecessors

We all know Kyle isn't gonna fire himself, thus, Wilks becomes the scapegoat.
Sucks. He did a good job.

I’m not sure why Shanahan needs a scapegoat. He runs the team and is probably 2nd only to Reid in job security. Firing a coordinator isn’t necessary, he doesn’t need to appease anyone
He was average and not a fit, life goes on

Their defensive game plan in the superbowl was weird. They basically left all mid range throws wide open
They actually contained Mahomes for the most part, kept him in the pocket.
But they blitzed at the worst possible times and since KC held like crazy all game, the blitzes just opened up opportunities for Mahomes.
Coaching staff has to get a feel for the refs and adjust...more zone, less leaving the secondary in man.

People must hate him, his career is full of one or two year stints

I guess they think it's Wilks fault that Kittle, Deebo and Aiyuk combined for less than 100 yards.

Wilks has to be one of the unluckiest coaches in the league between the 1 season at Arizona, not getting the Carolina job and then this.
This suggests the issue was more than just “bad luck”. He may be a solid coach, but more likely he is a difficult employee
