Damn that's absolutely horrible. I didn't know anyone broke Kipyoege's record.

I hope his country do something to honor him this year in the Olympics.

Likely Gold Medal winner in the upcoming Paris Olympics.

He had passed Kipchoge, imo.

RIP Kelvin and Coach Gervais.

He was almost certain to be the first under 2hrs in a real race. Likely next year.

Truly terrible

For me, personally, this is worse than Kobe. I know others aren’t going to relate but this sport means so much to me and Kiptum was a modern day pioneer. As others have said the pursuit for sub 2, dominating an old man’s event in the marathon as a young gun, dying in his prime, leaving behind a family, this just sucks all the way around. The running world is going to hurt for a while from this.

I don't even know what's comparable to this in terms of someone dying while on top. He's already the world record holder with likely a 10-15 year career ahead of him.

I pray there were no back room politics involved in the crash and it was simply operator error.

Pretty damn suspicious timing

or, they're non-vaxxed (like me) who think blaming the Vax for a car wreck only makes anti-vaxxers look like absolute loons.

He probably fell asleep at the wheel. I saw some posts on letsrun stating that his management wasnt the best and he often had to go to sponser meetings and such on sundays on the tail end of training weeks. He was scheduled to run rotterdam on april 14 which means he would likely be in the early stages of the toughest parts of his training cycle (100+ mile weeks) right now. Piecing that together I feel like it would make sense that he fell asleep on an already dangerous stretch of road.

Who knows if thats right or if we'll ever know what happened but it would make sense.
