I'm from Opelousas and have close family in Ville Platte... I'd like to confirm your assertions.

Bogalusa by ten miles! Dad and grandparents home. Spent much of childhood there, too.

There are to many depressing towns in Louisiana rural parishes to even attempt to narrow it down to one most depressing,
If you pull up Google maps and did a screen shot of Louisiana and then printed it on an 8” x 10” page and lay it down, then take a precision compass and put 1 point on the dot for Alexandria and open the compass up 4” and while holding the 1 point on Ellick, make a circle on the map with the other point.
Once you’ve done this, look at the unincorporated areas, villages, towns and cities that fall within that circle, unfortunately every one of them could qualify for Most Depressing town compared to anywhere else in the US. These towns and many outside that circle are why Louisiana keeps ending up 50th in everything that it’s good to be 1st at.

Rio grande city is a good one
I am down in the valley on the border a few times a year.
I have never felt unsafe or unwelcome except for Rio Grande City. I’m pretty sure I accidentally walked in on a cartel meeting at a local restaurant.

It’s been a while and maybe the town has come up since, but I had funeral detail in Sweetwater, TX and it was pretty depressing. Did another funeral detail in Odessa and that place was terrible. There are some towns in between Dallas and Amarillo that look third world-ish.

Oh the stories I could tell about that town.

Obviously, none of you have been to Port Gibson.

Highway 61 through the Missouri Bootheel and south through Arkansas-
Take your pick from most of the towns you will go through or by.

Jena is a great small town actually. In fact I would call it an ideal small town. Good people, town is clean, good public schools, bunch of good churches, several really good burger/chicken joints, etc. It should never be mentioned in a list alongside of Ferriday which literally has spots that look like a third world country…

Lots of depressed and financially strapped towns and cities in the United States and poor infrastructure.
So just think of the trillions upon trillions of dollars we spent in overseas wars that could’ve been invested in our own communities and in our own people.
Food for thought…
