I love the narrative MM had no talent last year. He had 3 starters from the year before plus brought with him 3 players that lead him to the sweet 16 the previous year. He’s an average coach who does great in a small conference. He’s not sec good and wade is. People don’t like wade because he didn’t kiss the ring here and did it his way. Kansas gave self and extension, Auburn gave BP an extension, we fired wade. LSU can’t handle men basketball being good
This is an absurdly horrible take

LSU isn't Kentucky

It is. Just not for us, but this board thinks its ok because we are improving and playing hard

I feel like most folks overestimate the amount of talent available in the portal.
Dalton Knecht came from the portal..:
Wright, Baker, and Cook were solid portal additions. The problem is that he fricked himself so bad with trying to bring half his team over from Murray St is that he really didn’t have a base squad to add them to.
He needs 4 freshman like a Mike Williams or a Brandon Murray that can play and contribute as Freshman but aren’t one and dones to build a base around. Then add 2-3 portal pieces around it. Right now he has 2 solid pieces signed. He needs 2 more imo

Yes, but it can be more like building a team out of sand.

Especially in a sport with only 5 starters. Maybe I’m wrong. Kentucky basically has a completely new team every year.
Do the fricking retards around here not realize the NCAA waited forever to issue a ruling on LSU’s status? This will be his first recruiting class to not have that hanging over his head. See what they do next year and then go ahead and judge.

Your talking about Men's Basketball, ask when was the last time LSU basketball got to the final 8, equal to Omaha.
LSU men's basketball just has not established a program that attracts the players like Kentucky.

Sorry, meant for WBB.

The unknown upcoming sanctions and Wade’s refusal to have the decency to at least tell LSU which players he did or did not pay absolutely killed us. McMahon not only got the job in late March, had to completely gut the roster and then only had 4 months to field a team.
What the frick are you talking about?
Its crazy how people just make up complete bullshite and post it like its a fact.

He had to bring the Murray kids because the LSU kids at the time rightfully portaled after Wade was fired. KJ was all-SEC, Trae has been solid, Hill was just a disaster though I’ll give you that. His game did not translate.

He’s starting to stack this, Ward and Reed were the first two. They’ve gotten a bit better still room left to grow in their game. Added Mike Williams to that this year, Chest is hopefully working in the background to contribute next year, and now the two top 75 guys next year. On paper that’s a solid enough foundation of program guys that, to your point, you can supplement with a high level impact transfer and some role guys. Now he just has to do that and win. Hopefully he can but if not it’s time to move on.

Yes but harder for sustainability

Ha! The real answer is….maybe. Sometimes you’re the windshield and sometimes you’re the bug. For CBK, year one was windshield and last year was bug.

And McMahon signed the 17th best HS class that season. He signed as many top 100 players as Texas, Auburn, Villanova, Baylor, Houston, Michigan St. That year. He signed MORE top 100 players than UConn, Creighton, Purdue, Gonzaga that season. In fact, unless LSU signs another player this year's class that first class will be ranked much higher. The excuse of the "looming sanctions" and "dark cloud" hindering recruiting over the last two years falls apart when you look at actual facts.
Total number of top 100 players signed in 2022 and 2023 (McMahon's first two recruiting classes)
UConn - 4
Auburn - 3
Gonzaga - 2
Purdue - 1
Arizona - 4
Texas - 3
Florida - 1
South Carolina - 1
Mississippi State - 1
Villanova - 2
LSU - 3
Marquette - 1
Houston - 3
When compared to SEC contemporaries and some of the best programs in the nation McMahon's signing classes compared, favorably. His classes were certainly better than Lamont Paris at South Carolina. LSU battled them last year for the title of worst team in the SEC last season. LSU pulled away at the end. In fact, South Carolina was the ONLY team LSU was picked to finish ahead of in the preseason polls. Apparently South Carolina didn't get the message as they sit at 20-3 and flying up the projected seed line in the NCAAT. LSU is celebrating "playing hard" for a 10:00 stretch in a 20 point blowout loss.
Quickly "Rebuilding" (or really just building) a winning roster has NEVER been easier than it is now. Sustaining it is a different story. Unfortunately, to date, McMahon has done neither. That's not what I, as an LSU fan, want to be the case. It just is what it is. And never before have I seen so many fans twist themselves in to pretzels trying to defend such futility.

False. McMahon retained 2 players from wade, and those two players combined to average 5.7 points the previous year.

The problem with MM is he is just an average coach. He isn’t as bad as everyone made him out to be last year but he also doesn’t have the upside a lot of people want to believe he has. The level of coaching in the SEC has improved significantly over the years. He’s a middle of the pack kind of guy whose upside is a bubble team in the NCAAT in good years and an NIT bid the other years. Woody needs to decide if he’s good with that for the MBB program or if he wants MBB to really compete at a top 20 level every year.

Also false.
McMahon retained three: Wilkinson, Miller, Justice Williams.

With the portal and a sport with only 5 starters (purpose of my question) what the previous coach leaves is irrelevant
Yep, you only need 5 players, that’s all you play during a game, is 5. Yes that makes it easy.

OK you got me. Miller didn’t play a minute before McMahon was here. But still, my statement that McMahon inherited literally under 3 buckets a game from wade still stands

Come to LSU and join our prestigious basketball program. Look at all the champions who came before you
If this is sarcastic, then frick you.
If you are being truthful LSU has one of the more storied SEC basketball programs. Kentucky is the obvious premier program, but LSU is second in terms of SEC titles and the top 5 star list exceeds any other program. Florida and Arkansas have national titles and would be the only programs in their class outside of Kentucky.
