Florida Car Dealer demanding to handle out of state title / registration

Im currently corresponding with a car dealership in South Florida about a sale and I am a Louisiana resident. This dealership is demanding to handle the titling & registration of the vehicle in Louisiana at time of sale in Florida…and of course charge me huge fees to do so. However, I looked up and even quoted to them the Florida Highway Safety title transfer procedure manual that they are not required to handle out of state registration titling.
Has anyone bought in Florida from out of state where they demanded to handle out of state registration themselves?

Florida dealerships have developed an unsavory reputation for all sorts of things like this.
If you are in Louisiana consider Texas dealers as an alternative. And tell the Florida man why.

New car or used? Are you financing?

Used car. Paying cash. No loan whatsover.

The dealer was probably relying on those fee’s to make up for the cheap price they gave you. There are dealers out there who make a reputation for themselves attracting people from outside their territory with crazy low prices. Once the person shows up from hours away….BAM hit em with the fee’s and nail em on any accessories. Best to pay the best deal you can get locally with the dealership who has the best service.

I bought in Florida in 2020 and they did handle the out of state title and registration. It was seamless for me. No huge fees.

One thing I have learned from buying from Florida is they have huge doc fees. I want to say my friend gets $899 at his Audi store. The transom on his 50’ Viking reads “Dock Fee” lol

The doc fees here are out of control. We bought back in 2020 and I was floored.
OP, you buying from Step One?

not Florida, but I was recently quoted about $900 in fees at a Georgia dealership.

Excuse my ignorance
How do you get a temp tag to drive the car home from Florida, if the dealer doesn’t arrange for the registration?

quote:I think any dealer can issue a temp plate. In 2018 I bought a new ford truck from Andalausia Ford in Alabama,. Very small dealership. I paid cash(check) and gave them the title to my trade. They gave me the certificate of origin and a temp tag, I took the COI to the express DMV in mandeville and paid the tax/registered the truck and got the plate that day.

My biggest beef is that if I were registering the vehicle in Florida at time of purchase, they would charge the accurate registration pricing that all goes to the state of Florida and that's it.
They are essentially attempting to charge me $2K extra because it would be an out of state registration.

Just walk away, you always have to be able to walk-away when buying a car.
I bought my car out of state and the dealer handled the Texas registration. They were only charging maybe an extra $100 for it, and I let them do it. $2000 is way unacceptable.

It's a Florida dealer. They have been getting away with substantial markups over the last four years.
I think the accurate statement is more likely to be the dealer is counting on a bunch of hidden fees to further pad their hefty profits.
OP should probably just not buy right now because there are a shite ton of repossessed vehicles in the pipeline from defaults. The no sales at dealer auctions are up even when the volume is steady or down.

Then walk away OP. This is why you always get the actual complete invoice with total out the door price. Plenty of dealers have add on fees beyond just the vehicle price.
I just bought a used vehicle yesterday in Florida and it was less than $500 in fees.
