I played the game. That play was exciting and impacted the game, but it was not a difficult play.
The bunt was hit right at him, took a big hop, fielded above the knees, and he short armed it to the catcher. Exciting and awesome, yes. Difficult? Not really. "Greatest play ever?" Not even close.

The catcher had the ball in his mitt before the guy left the ground for his slide. In high levels of baseball, that's out by a mile. If you can say with 100% certainty he's out while watching it live, it's not exactly bang bang.
Again...awesome play, yes. Exciting play, yes. Close play, nope.

I get it. You're excited by an exciting play. What made it exciting was the situation.

Greatest Defensive Play in LSU Baseball History??

quote:You act like you are alone in this. You act like most 1Bs can make it. Neither is true. Is it a 10/10 on the difficulty scale? Perhaps not for someone as athletic as Morgan, but it’s way up there and an impossible play for nearly every 1B in college due to their speed limitations. That being said, it’s a great play and one of the greatest for every other reason you state. Timing and situation. In no way is at an “easy” out. You think robbing a HR is easy simply because someone gets to the wall in time? Because that’s what you’re making this out to be.
I played the game.
ETA: the greatest hit in LSU baseball history is one of the shortest and softest hit HRs possible yet it’s the greatest because of what was at stake and how it impacted the result. Kindly STFU.

If we're taking game scenarios out of the equation, Bergman’s behind second base snag and throw against TCU is by far the most impressive.

These are such bad takes
If anything in that play takes a fraction of a second longer, the runner is safe. If the throw is not perfect, he's safe. If Milazzo doesn't tag him in one motion, he's safe. Nothing about that play was routine or easy, just stop. Neither Morgan nor Milazzo could have had any wasted movements nor could that play have been made any other way than how it was made.

And no chance he the runner gets tagged out if this hadn't happened.

This play doesn't get talked about near enough. If he does not make this catch, Florida wins game 1 and then the title in game 2.

Disagree. I've seen it made plenty of times, albeit not in such a critical game/situation. That's what makes it an awesome and exciting play.

Agree, except for "greatest." Which is the only distinction I've made, and only that because it's the title of the thread.

I didn't say it was "easy", just that it's not extremely difficult and at the D1-and-above level, it's pretty high percentage. Much like a SS making a backhand in the hole and making the throw. Not easy, but fairly common...because they're f'n good.

Take it easy, sport. It's the internet and we're debating a baseball play. Safety behind a keyboard doesn't make you a tough guy.

Considering he ran the wrong coverage, I don’t think so. Still unbelievable.
That takes nothing away from how great a physical play Tre made. That’s like saying Tanks’s walk-off 2-run homer in the same game wouldn’t be great, if he had missed a take sign.

was definitely a significant play - no doubt about that - but I wouldn't call it "great." High chopping bunt, big meaty hop, caught straight on, easy short arm toss to home, out by a mile.
Outside of the out by a mile part, I tend to agree here. If anything, Milazzo has the harder part of the play IMO.

I didn't say I had seen "a 1B throw the ball home for a play at the plate." I said I've seen THAT play (a 1B charging a bunt and making the play at home).
That was right at him and a big ol' meaty hop too. Hell, I've seen them shoestring it and flip it out of their glove. It was a cool play and it was an awesome moment given the situation. I never said it wasn't...just that it's not the "greatest defensive play in LSU baseball history" (<--- thread title, with question marks, indicating "agree or disagree?"...I disagree).
What looks sexy/exciting and what is difficult/"great" aren't always the same thing.
I made a diving play on a looper up the middle to end the game against the #1 team in the state during the playoffs. We were up by 1 and they had runners on 2nd and 3rd. Had it gotten through, they win and we lose.
Was it exciting? Yes. An awesome moment? Yes. Did it look incredible? Probably. Was it a difficult play? Not even close. It was the percentage equivalent of Steph Curry shooting a free throw.
Coolest moment, and I played it up for sure, but it was not at all the greatest play. Not even close.
quote:
Most people would consider a high-percentage play easy. You are full of contradictions.
Easy and high-percentage are not the same thing. Not at all. What makes good baseball players good is...they routinely make difficult plays.

Why are you, as a Texas fan, over trying to convince e anyone you are an expert on anything, much less anything LSU Baseball related???

so did roughly 90% of the guys on TV that talked about how amazing of a play it was.
those guys were all Americans, 1st rounders, dudes with MLB careers.
so sorry if you warming the bench for East Paducah Tech for the Blind doesn't get me all excited.

I didn't play professionally, but I did play in college. I know enough to have a pretty well informed opinion.
It happens to be different than yours, and you seem to be upset by it, causing you to passive-aggressively lash out like an emotionally immature juvenile. You're safe here on the internet - but in real life, might I suggest articulating your position and then accepting a differing opinion? Not everybody will take lip off of you.

Then by your own rules, unless you've at played at the collegiate level (at a minimum), your opinion is worth less than mine.
Of course, I don't see it that way and I'm happy to simply disagree with you...but you're the one making the rules and painting yourself into a corner logically.
Kinda funny, actually.

I've been a fan of LSU baseball since the Gorilla Ball days and I am still a fan. The only time I'm not rooting for them is when they're playing Texas.
Does the color of jersey Tre Morgan was wearing have any bearing on baseball or on the play itself?
The title of the damn thread is ...

Greatest Defensive Play in LSU Baseball History??
...and that's the context of my posts. Nothing more than that.
In my opinion, no it's not. It was an exciting play in a crucial moment of a huge game (I got pretty fired up when I saw it live), but it wasn't the "greatest defensive play in LSU baseball history." It really wasn't a terribly difficult or special play outside of the context in which it was made.. The moment was incredible though.
I gave an opinion and explained the basis for it. You guys are acting like I said Tre Morgan and LSU Baseball sucks or something.
Sensitive bunch.
