Heading to New England in May for a beer trip with my dad and also visiting some family and friends across the area.

Have a tentative plan based on where we are meeting people and have some stops already planned for the heavy hitters like Treehouse, etc but looking for suggestions for less well known great breweries. I know some of the FBD guys were up there recently so if you wouldn’t mind sharing your itinerary I would appreciate it.

Also happy to meet up with anyone who might be in the area.

Day 1-Boston
Day 2-Providence
Day 3-Albany and upstate NY
Day 4-Burlington and upstate Vermont
Day 5-Through NH to Portland
Day 6-Portland and back to Boston

Allagash in Portland is good. You can just go and drink and eat, or you can pay a little for a curated tasting.

I live in Boston and go to Portland and Vermont a decent amount. There are honestly so many options it can be overwhelming, so my first advice is to select the “must visits” and figure out any others from there.

Boston spots include:
Trillium (go to the Seaport location)
Harpoon (walkable from trillium - get the pretzel)
Lamplighter (Cambridge)
Aeronaut (Somerville)
Night Shift (Everett or by the North End)
Lord Hobo (Southie)
Dorchester Brewing (Dorchester)
DO NOT waste your time with Sam Adams

Boston beer bars: Bukowskis and Five Horses

For treehouse - be strategic about which one you go to. There’s on on the Cape, one in Western Mass (the flagship), one in Deerfield, and one in the Boston suburb of Tewksbury. Select one that you can make a detour and hit during your drives.

Portland:
Bissell Brothers
Rising Tide
Maine Beer Company (Freeport)
Austin Street
Allagash
Battery Steele
Lone Pine
Oxbow
Blythe & Burrows (for a cocktail to mix things up if you want)

Vermont (Burlington):
Foam
Burlington Beer Co
Zero Gravity

Vermont (Stowe):
Alchemist
Idletyme
Von Trapp
Stowe Cider (seriously don’t sleep on it because it’s a cidery)
Hill Farmstead (very out of the way but worth the drive if you can make it)
Lawsons Finest (also a little outside Stowe but closer than Hill Farmstead)

Thanks for the recs, I figured you would have some good advice. I’ve been to the one in Tewksbury so may try another one but will have to figure out which one works best. All those Boston ones look good, didn’t figure Sam Adams would be worth it.

Hill Farmstead is a must if possible. It’s a glorious place. We were there in November, spent about 5 hours there. I’m trying to figure out a way to back there sooner than later.

Man, I’m jealous. I’ve never been on a beer tour in New England, but can tell you the spots that would be high on my list.

Treehouse is a no-brainer. Some other spots Abita hasn’t mentioned yet…

Fiden’s, Albany, NY
Root + Branch, Copiague, NY
Equilibrium, Middleton, NY
The Alchemist, Stowe, VT

Also, my family vacationed in Maine every year several years ago and Freeport is great, so I’d definitely hit Maine Beer. Lunch is a favorite of mine.

I'm going to throw some love to Schilling. Really solid Continental European beers plus their taphouse is literally on the river. It's about an hour from Hill Farmstead and can be on the way to Portland if you take Route 302. Rek Lis is right nearby as well. I think Moat Mountain is in North Conway but I've never been.

Definitely going to Hill Farmstead. I’ve read a few places that it can get crowded but will likely be there on a weekday so hopefully that will help.

Thanks for the recs, still trying to decide how far into NY we are going which would impact a couple of those. Fidens and Alchemist are definite stops as well as Maine Beer.

My brother actually recommended Schilling as well. He follows them on IG and showed me their taproom. Looks beautiful and looks like they make solid beers too. Adding it to the list. Thanks!

When going from Providence to Albany, take Rt. 146 North out of Providence to Worcester, MA and hit Wormtown Brewery on Shrewsbury St.

Worcester is where Brian Kelly went to college (Assumption University) and you can see the Brian Kelly football "stadium".

Then hit Tree House in Charlton on your way west on the Mass. Pike.

If you make it to Freeport, ME be sure to hit LL Bean.

If I only had one day in Vermont, I would spend it in Waterbury going to Prohibition Pig, Blackback Pub and The Reservoir. Hit the Craft Beer Cellar across the street from Pro Pig. Drive over to Burlington and walk around downtown and maybe check out Foam (I've had hit and miss experiences) and maybe drive up to the Beverage Warehouse in Winooski 10 min north of Burlington.

But, those three places in Waterbury will have beer selections all around better than you will drink brewery hopping in the area. If you want to go to actual breweries mostly, Alchemist is also in Waterbury. Lawson's is 10 min south in Waitsfield (where I got married, actually). Original Ben & Jerry's factory is in Waterbury. 20 min south is Warren and should visit the Warren Store for breakfast and visit its covered bridge. Warren is about Vermont as Vermont can get. 30 min north of Waterbury is Stowe and in May you should zip line down Stowe Mountain, which is awesome.

As for visiting Hill Farmstead, you sound like you're going to be on the road a lot. Hill's to go offerings are never special. If you want to drink on site, just realize it's a pain in the arse to get to, you'll probably lose phone signal, can't be more out of the way and not really a safe place to leave from if you drink much. I've been to a couple big events there (Festival of Farmhouse Ales and Zwanze) and they literally required you to be dropped off so driving afterwards wasn't an option. First time we went, we AirBnB'ed in Greensboro literally in a barn. It was neat.

Hill Farmstead is amazing. These are just my two cents if I had only one day in Vermont.

I just saw Pro Pig only serves their in house beer now, which makes me feel like I need to reevaluate life. Their food is still fricken amazing. But! The Reservoir has Abner on draft, which Hill Farmstead isn't saying available on site currently, and I go wherever the Abner goes.

I know you said May and not today, obviously, but this also kind of goes to show you that to some extent, you should make your choices of where to visit based on offerings the actual day you will be in that area.

I was there a few months ago and they had taken the carnitas burrito and tacos off the lunch menu. It was still good but not as good as it used to be, IMO.

Alchemist is also in Waterbury

Not to nitpick, but Alchemist is in Stowe. Waterbury is a great little town to visit though.

I was doing more typing than thinking. You're right. The original production facility is in Waterbury, so I've always thought of it as a Waterbury brewery. I'm in Baton Rouge and since having toddlers, traveling and thinking happen a lot less these days lol.

There was an article in Zymurgy this month on Stowe. Basically a road trip that visited Von Trappe, Idle Tyme, the Alchemist

And i've never been, but in addition to Abitafan's list, i've been wanting to visit Notch brewing in Boston and Foam Brewers in Burlington.

Great under the radar IPA is in White River Junction, VT; it’s called Mas Verde by River Roost Brewery.. It’s a tiny operation and you could stop through leaving VT to head east as it’s on the border of VT and NH. Brewery is tiny and there’s a decent dive bar a block away and a few places to grab a bite in town; Hanover, NH is right cross the river too if you want to visit Dartmouth college; some good beer bars in pretty little college town.

This is a super cheesy rec. but what i thought was cool when in Boston was to go to Beantown Pub and drink a Sam Adams while gazing across the street at Sam Adams grave.
