What they do does not require athleticism. But it surely helps.

Also by modern day height and weight standards you need to be fit/athletic just to climb into a car like that.

Look. in REAL sports tragedies happen all the time.

Men are hit with devastating injuries.

Racing is for sissies.

Sometimes they don't even die. Both of Alex Zanardi's legs are somewhere in this flying debris field. That sissy lived.

They are more like elite fighter pilots.

Once upon a time these guys experienced 5 and 6 Gs during high speed corners and braking.

And they do that for 50-70 laps, sometimes in extreme heat.

Are elite fighter pilots athletes?

I'm not sure I care about the distinction. But it takes very special people to compete at this level.

I've taken some fast street cars around a track, and that's a workout. I can't begin to imagine driving an F1 car, much less racing it. Sim racing an F1 car takes immense amount of mental power. Now add in the physical forces and 19 other cars. No way

Hell I’ve driven a RV across the lower 48 3 times, once with a 8-1/2 x 20 enclosed trailer and once with a boat trailer with a wife, 2 kids, 2 dogs and a cat and once with my 78 year old Daddy with us….them dudes job is easy compared to keeping those frickers from killing one another….

He lost nearly 4 pints of blood and survived. He's a tough sonofobitch and also had an angel on his shoulder.

With 5G's of force, intense hand-eye coordination, intense mental and physical strain, and not to mention having to be in peak physical and cardio shape to be able to do it through a whole race.

Yep, it's the same as driving. GTFOH.

You don't have to be athletic to drive a race car. You need skill.

Not to mention hitting pretty much the exact same lines on the track every lap at those speeds. Verstappen is insane in his ability to do that. All this while managing tires that are made to degrade.

You're definitely not wrong about the skill involved but you also need athletic ability.
