We are debating general "athleticism".

I think you’re the one who went off on that tangent.

The drivers are getting smoked. Sure they will beat the golfers and some others and put up a good fight but they aren't going to measure up to what we consider professional athletes. Doing something with a car is simply not the same thing as doing something with your body.

You clearly have zero idea the training these guys go through or really anything about F1

I don't think other professional athletes could do what they do.

Which makes all drivers even more of an athlete.

That makes absolutely no sense. There are a million things that are really hard and that a non-specialist can't do. That has more to do with skill and aptitude.

Again, nobody is arguing what they "do" is easy. I could invent a sport where you have to repair an MRI machine and while doing so every ten minutes you have to put your tools down and run a lap around a track. Only a handful of people would be able to do this sport - not because of the running so much, but because there are only so many people who possess the intelligence, skill and experience to repair an MRI machine.

When we speak of "athleticism" we are generally referring to the physical traits of the human body - speed, strength, agility, stamina, etc..

That's why I tossed out the Decathalon challenge. Everybody can run; jump, throw, etc. You put people out on THAT track and you're going to find out who the best athletes are. Doesn't mean they can hit a curve ball, pick up a 7-10 split or perfectly down shift into a corner pass, but you will know what physical attributes you have to start with.

Mental focus plus the physical aspect makes these guys some of the best athletes in the world.

F1 drivers are equally athletic as Curling teams.

But they do have these qualities and more of 'athletes.' The thing that binds all athletes from respective disciplines is elite levels of coordination.

No, it is a track event which tests which people are good at specific track events.

Pretty hard to reach the cup holder or your dip cup when you're pulling G"s lap after lap.

It was Michael Schumacher at Benetton who brought the whole hyper-conditioning thing to the fore. It was insane.

Aryton Senna was still the man.

No. They are well conditioned but nothing to do with athleticism

Disagree

Endurance is important and you can't be a 400 lb slob and be an F1 driver

There is some degree of athleticism involved

I'm sure they have to be in shape since those cars beat the hell out of the driver.

Add the constant wind banging on your helmet & wearing a full track suit with track temps going up to 140 degrees while a 1000hp motor screams up and down for hours and you have yourself a goat roping that not many people could handle

The amount of people who have no idea the difficulty of pulling 5 lateral g's while having to drive an f1 is astounding. Yes they are athletes
