I lived mine. I had both the old style and the “waveless” version.
I slept soundly on both and there was nothing like climbing into a warm water bed on a cold night. Well, except for the one time my heater failed - I woke up damn near hypothermic.

A bed with a built-in liquor cabinet - what’s not to love about that??

Pretty worth it if you could pay for it all up front, but there were a lot of jokers financing at the time which really cheapened the status symbol that it actually was.
When I was at a bar with and in competition for a young mare with other guys, you could do a lot of things, but dropping the "he finances his waterbeds" usually pointed them in the right direction (me.)

A conventional mattress will accumulate 10 pounds of dead skin in a decade.
That's one advantage of a waterbed.

Like others said, cold as hell if the sheet slipped off.
And a major pain in the arse. I had two and the only reason I had either was because I got them when I moved into new apartments of friends who didn't want to move them so I just took them over.
Terrible for sex.
More than once I woke up soaking wet when they sprung a leak too.

They sucked and were a complete hassle to deal with.

Were waterbeds good?
First bed I bought. It was a couple of weeks before I got married. I bought a waterbed because I couldn't afford a real mattress . Mine was $110 including a headboard. Std mattress, box spring, frame was 5x that. Lot's of fun. You enjoy what you have.

They were comfortable enough as long as the heater was working.
Gospel. Heater sucking was miserable.

they were said to be great for having sex on, but not good at all for sleeping on
often people who bought them would get seasick because it feels like it never stops moving.
plus they weight so much they will break through the floor if the joists arent strong enough. if you get one, you better damn well make sure the weight load is adequately supported by solid lumber

No. They were not comfortable and the temperature was never right.

They were cold and a nightmare when you were drunk.

No, they sucked for sleeping and worse for sex...
I don't know why the frick people in the 70's thought they were so great.

Loved my waveless California King. Trick was to not fill them up all the way. Best sleep and sex I’ve ever had. Again though…. As long as the heater was working good, you had the pad, and the sheets didn’t slip off.
Mine was actually a dual mattress version.

quote:Meh. Not nearly as comfortable as todays memory foam mattresses.
Were they comfortable?
They were cool in the summer though. That water was always cold.
