Not sure if any Corpsman chimed in, but did you try changing your socks, drinking water, and taking motrin?

That's welcome to the real world.

I've had two back surgeries because of sciatica issues. I know how bad it can be. Thankfully I work for myself but it was so bad I'd go take breaks in the car and be crying I was hurting so bad. Someone else had to help me put on my sock in the morning for 6 months straight. But it doesn't matter if your ex military or whatever, if you get hired as a manager at a job and take off two days for back pain after only working a few days, at most places, you're going to get fired.

I wouldn't have fired you, but most places, especially a big manufacturer, is going to. It's not a crazy injustice.

You'll bounce back.

Started a new job after retiring from the military at the beginning of the month. Start date was 22 Jan. Came down with acute sciatica on 26 Jan and missed two days. Went back in this morning and boss said pack you shite.

Man, sorry to hear it. Had the same sciatica problem. Started when I was 20. Had MRI and couldn't find any thing wrong with my lower back. Skip 30 years and one day I collapsed. The took a MRI of my neck and had to do immediate surgery. I don't know your situation, but get that shite fixed. Having waited that long, my arms were paralyzed for two months. Good luck

I broke my leg and needed crutches after starting a new job 15 years ago.

They fired me 3 days after I broke my leg.

Meh. Consider it a blessing. If someone will dump you like that you are better off finding a new place to work.

Yep.
He was expecting a bunch of "how dare they fire a retired military hero, those bastards !".
That was the only reason he mentioned being retired from the military.
He was sorely disappointed.

So you've cost yourself and company untold amounts of dollars because you fired good employees that had legitimate excuses for not being at work. Sounds like you soon be fired honestly. What a dumb management style.

There are some jobs that have to be covered. Like, you have to have someone there working. Legitimate excuse or not, the job has to be done.

A lot of jobs that are owned by a larger corporation have very little leeway the first 90 days. Then you become nearly unfire-able.

I broke my hand like 2 and a half months in at a new job, and was told that if i didnt show up to work i would be fired. So I showed up, cast and all and was sent home. Had I not come in, they would have absolutely fired me.

OP, sorry about your back pain. I deal with a much less painful back issue and it sucks. That said, the environment we work in today is different than just a few years ago. I think I am a pretty good boss and try really hard to accommodate my employees with medical issues. That said, I would have let you go too. I have no reason to not believe you, but my experience tells me that more often than not, an employee that starts this way will have chronic absenteeism and will eventually “get hurt” at work and be on workers comp. It does suck, but that’s the reality we live in.

Don't sound like much of a military man if a lil back pain caused you to miss 2 days of your second week at a new job. Sad

1. never had sciatica

2. never been in the military because you would know how serious they are about putting you on Gimp Squad. Proper rehab of injuries is what reduces combat ineffective downtime and they don't want to wear out a body prematurely when they have all the money invested in training you.
