I thought this was going to be about flashing them for everybody, not just for beads.

I am not against this. It is a pain in the arse to hold a tent space all night. I'd rather just get there early and have a place to set up.

This here. However, not everyone thinks this way.

I go in a very crowded area. There are some real territorial dipshits out there that try to take over huge areas, put ladders out for every family on their rented apartment whether they will be used or not, and argue with anyone trying to get through or encroach on “their space.” Those people suck.

I go out there very early am and make friends with the guys they pay to watch their shite. By being friendly and not an a-hole, I get new friends and they get a new friend. I find some open real estate and put out my couple of step ladders for the kids l, some chairs and a table. And have a nice little spot. I don’t get mad if people cut through. In fact, I’ll
Move shite to make a path for them because that’s better than someone getting stuck, falling over and knocking shite down.

I don’t get mad if someone uses a ladder no one else is using. I don’t get mad if someone sits in one of my chairs.

Last year for bacchus, the douches from the apartment next door had about 50 ladders set up. No one was there. Literally no one. We folded up our chairs and invited anyone interested to use a ladder and watch. Let a nice family from Cali that way. Met a nice lesbian couple that asked if they could buy a shot of vodka. I said no. You can have a cocktail though, come on in.

Point is it’s a fricking party. People need to relax and not be assholes. That’s goes both ways. There is plenty of space for everyone.

This. As the day goes on, if there are ladders/chairs not being used, I offer them up to people around me. Especially if there are kids. Pretty much always end up with new friends.

Yep.

Now, there are some assholes. But at least where we are, they’re all bluster. If you push back and be nice, remind them you’ve been here too for 30 years, they chill out. Never seen an actual fight over any of that stuff. I have seen one or two involving people walking by in the street and trying to steal other peoples shite.

You can’t roll in at 10 and claim your “lands”

If someone is out there all night with the stuff, whatever, that's fine.

The real issue is the people that set up stuff days in advance show up 1 hr before and get mad when people are in their area.

It seems those that are the problem children are non-NOLA locals think it’s ok to cordon off yards of space using whatever means they can, including putting those sports pods next to each other where no one can pass (this is why I avoid their premier parade, Endymion), or it’s the idiot Tulane/Loyola students that have no idea what Mardi Gras etiquette is. The “true” tourists, those paying for flights and hotel rooms can be obnoxious but once you educate them they’re almost always nice and everyone enjoys themselves. Of course, they’re exceptions to all of this.

So you are saying it is the carpetbaggers who don't understand how this is supposed to work, causing all the trouble?

Hmmm...

And yet no one felt the need to rope off half a block of space and threaten anyone who "steps on their land".

In fact, just the opppsite, in da parish, they would tell you to come close and get a plate of food...

How about cleaning up after the parade.
The tailgating spots after Football games are disgusting

Define carpetbagger in this context?
Very broad generalizations but here goes:
I find those that are from the outside parishes to be the most aggressive in defending “their” turf. They’ve driven an hour or 3, maybe driving right back after the parades or after a few days here, and want to get the most bang for their buck.
The college students are just looking for a good time with no regard to etiquette, aren’t all that aggressive, and can be persuaded not to grab throws from kids and such.
Those that are older and have discretionary dollars to spend on coming to Mardi Gras want to embrace the customs and not step on any toes so to speak. These are my favorite since they are new and want to learn. Just my .02
