Yeah, this could never go sideways. Hard pass.

I don't think you baws understand. These implants are for people who already have SERIOUS problems - total paralysis, nervous system diseases, complete shut-ins (ie, unable to communicate in any form), etc. These patients have an abysmal quality of "life" as it is, the most incremental improvement in their circumstances is HUGE.
As for primates, ask anyone from San Antonio about the "monkey farm". It's where most medical primates used in the US are sourced from, and where most of them go to retire when done as well. Back in the Great Tobacco Lawsuit days, they had a bunch of them there that were chain smokers from clinical research on tobacco products. They'd kill or die for a cig.

Exactly!
I have no issue with ppl taking a chance in those situations. Nothing to lose.

Y’all didn’t read the article. Trial will take 6 years. Then it’s to be rolled out to millions in order to go beyond the human biological potential.
frick this world.

Didn't we kill a frickton of monkeys during space research?
Aren't monkeys and chimps killed all the time by big pharma?
But now it's some huge issue?
Evolution is a bitch.

If Neuralink has AI properties and it learns to recognize people and tasks to give Alzheimer's patients' brains a little boost, I'm for it.
Hopefully nobody from Wired ever needs a neural implant that could solve scores of problems for themselves. They should be excluded forever.

Alzheimers was the first thing to come to mind. Id happily put one on my dad right now if it did that

I get it, but Elon has made it clear that he envisions this as ultimately being a direct interface between biology and technology for “generalized applications”. Helping people with severe physical disabilities is the first step because, frankly, it’s the easiest to rationalize and to get funding for. But make no mistake, he’s definitely aiming at making this as ubiquitous as smartphones.
And look, I do believe this is likely to be a net positive for humanity. I’m just saying I’m not going to be the first or the millionth to do it.

There was a primate testing building on Brooks AFB before it closed in SA. There were a few protests outside the old front gate when I was there. The building had no windows. We called it the monkey building. By the time I got there, it was all contract and civilian workers there.
