It would be great except for all the dirty hippies there.

Have lived in both places 4+ years, and Seattle is far, far worse weather-wise. Not even really close.
I guess we value different weather characteristics. Chicago is way too extreme for me. Seattle is comfortable and temperate.

I already live outside of Seattle and have been for 31 years. I no longer go into the city. It's spectacular here!

ETA: some od the uninformed takes in this thread are hilarious. I'm far from wealthy, I've made many, many lifelong friends, I'm appreciative for the opportunities I've had here and I will miss it dearly when I move back to LA/MS to be closer to my aging mom and family.

people on here think anything outside of the south or a very rural area requires substantial wealth to live a decent life or even make ends meet. it's pretty funny.

Wife's frequent complaint was 'I miss Whataburger'.

There was some local abortion of a restaurant chain called Taco Time that served its Tex-Mex combo meals with tater tots.

Or I just used the cost of living calculator to see how much I would need to live in Seattle in my current salary.

Yeah it’s prob not perfect, but I would need around a $60k raise to move there.

Not sure I’d get that.

Plus I’m on 6 acres rt now and have stocked ponds with bass.

Weather was dark most of the time. The air is clean because it's always raining.

The air pollution in Seattle and Nola are similar. They have more noise and light pollution and are more dissatisfied with spending time in the city.

Plus they have instances of smoke from wild fires.

I spent last weekend in downtown Seattle. The homeless problem, while present, isn't as bad as it is overblown in the media. I expected a zombie apocalypse. People tell you to avoid 3rd Ave in the Belltown area of Seattle. I did. There were great bars & restaurants on 2nd Ave and I had no problems in that area. There were a handful of people I thought were likely homeless but no one approached me. I expected droves of homeless robbing folks and doing drugs. Instead, in downtown Seattle it is wealthy people walking their dogs and young, professional couples pushing baby strollers.

There are significant issues in major cities, but it’s way overblown on this site. The real world is very different than the way the online world portrays it.

a big thing is what neighborhoods you visit, where exactly you are staying, and the method of transportation you are using.

i've been to nyc twice since covid and the first time it felt like a disgusting shithole. the second time, i hardly saw any homeless people, everything was clean, and overall very pleasant.

Seattle ain't terrible but it is a cultural wasteland. The entire Pacific Northwest is about as generic as generic gets. Its beautiful but its just very plain. Their idea of a good meal is clam chowder and coffee. Nothing at all wrong with that but its about as bland as bland gets. The people are not overly friendly either. They aren't unfriendly they just ain't apt to strike up a conversation or carry on a conversation like we do in the south with strangers. I could live in Seattle but it's be about like living in Johns Creek or Alpharetta in Atlanta, perfectly fine but boring as hell.

The suburbs have some redneck-esque good blue collared folks. The libtards in the city suck, but the suburbs are great.

I would caution that what passes for a staunch conservative in the Pacific Northwest, with the exception of most of Idaho and some parts of Utah, would make the most progressive people of Austen and Atlanta seem like Ronald Reagan. Especially in Washington ALL of the blue collar jobs are union jobs....almost no none union jobs in the area. That alone is indicative of what a PNW conservative is about. I was more than happy with the politics in the area but I can assure you most of the posters here would not be, even in the most conservative groups of people.

Those folks living in those houses are clipping coupons and getting the lights turned off on $500K a year.

Couldn’t agree more. Great food options, great fishing, great views. There is a lot to like about the PNW once you get out of Seattle. I even enjoyed visiting Seattle for work, but the homeless are annoying.

I disagree on the food part. There is better food in most gas stations in South Carolina than the finest restaurants anywhere in the PNW. Its all bland crap. Oysters are good but $7-$10 EACH in dive bars....frick that. I can get chattahoochee river oysters (Appalachacola) in dive bars around me for $18 a dozen and theyre just as good.

I was supposed to move to the Seattle suburbs in 2012ish. My company accepted my transfer request and everything.

We went up there for a week, stayed with my wife's best friends (one of the reasons we were moving up there), toured all the areas, looks at houses, etc.

We were all a go. We fell in love with the Richmond/Edmonds area.

We were making plans, looking at houses, and then within the same week, my wife's friends suddenly moved back to LA and my wife found out she was pregnant. That nixed those plans.

Always wonder what my life would look like today if we had actually made that move.
