Hey at least someone called them the "University of Louisiana" though. That's all that really matters.

The worst piece of these reports is they rarely, if ever, account for the value of the national media/marketing exposure due to national vs. cable vs. online.
So when they say an athletic dept. or school "lost" that money, it's disingenuous.

Well ULM and Louisiana Tech manage to not include that and maintain close to a balanced budget in these same reports.

Schools also justify sports (especially football) as a fundraising tool. May be difficult to quantify that was well.

Depends on the school. Sometimes, an operating loss is just that. Not saying it is in this case.
I will say people can make accounting paint the story they want. If you’re anti-athletics, easy to say they lost $8 million. If you’re pro-athletics, easy to say it’s partly a marketing/fundraising/enrollment expense.

Don't you usually spend money on marketing to drive increased revenue? I would think spending an excessive amount for "exposure" to the point of running a deficit is not good business practices.

Here is my problem with it. Skip Holtz’ roster talent fell off of a cliff because Louisiana Tech couldn’t afford to pay COA (cost of attendance aka a stipend to scholarship athletes) while our peers could.
Meanwhile the Cajuns are still paying full COA while Louisiana Tech pays about 50% because that is all we can afford.
Two in-state schools in the same system playing by different rules. It’s bullshite.

A title reading: “UL spent $8 million on national marketing as the athletic department breaks even.” …. Paints an entirely different picture for sure

You would need other metrics to go with the “spending” point for exposure. - Did enrollment increase? Increased licensed merchandise profits? Etc… All much harder to quantify, but not impossible.

This isn't surprising. Most schools who aren't in P5 conferences lose money on athletics. 10 years ago, only a handful of athletic departments in the country turned an overall profit. A lot more do now because of how much more valuable the recent TV media rights deals have been for the power conferences. But G5 schools mostly all lose money on athletics.
Link below shows who makes what. And keep in mind that the "total allocated" column is money that the athletic department counts as part of their revenue but in reality is coming from student fees or other money from university funds. Smaller programs are getting the majority of their athletic funding from the school directly as opposed to media rights, ticket sales, or gameday revenues.
USA Today - NCAA athletics revenue/expense by school

If they are losing that amount of money they need to drop down to Division III. They can be a DIII power and win all sorts of championships when the title games are on ESPN 8 they can be branded "Louisiana"

Have you stepped foot in a LSU classroom lately, or even the library. It’s honestly disgusting that the “Flagship” school of Louisiana is allowed to operate with the state of those buildings.

Yeah there's been a hiring freeze in the A.D. for awhile. It's no surprise they have been losing money. They hired a garbage HC for less money and are now seeing the results.
I still can't believe they are renovating the stadium. Half of it is now demolished and it could stay that way and still be empty on game day.
