With those two as interim co-OCs for LSU’s 35-31 bowl win over Wisconsin, the Tigers posted 492 yards of total offense.

Great. Fantastic.

Now what’s Sloans numbers at LATech and Hankton’s numbers…..oh wait, he has ZERO OC experience anywhere, let alone the SEC.

Thus board would be in nuclear melt down if someone started a thread and said…

My sources say the the next OC to be named will be a tandem. One was once a middle of the road CUSA OC in the only chance he got and one has never called plays at all.

What a terrible decision.

So what is the reason we didn't go out and hire one of the best OCs in the country?

Your first experience with a co-coordinator? You realize it's just for money and a title, correct? Hankton won't be doing anything different than he was already doing.

2024 is likely going to be a rough year, regardless, so if it doesn't work out we can go in a different direction for 2025.

"rough" is relative. Is the 2024 offense going to be a good as 2023? No. But that would have likely been the case with ANY OC. Is an offense ranked in the top 25 considered "rough"? What about top 40?

I think something in the top 30 is a reasonable goal. LSU may have one of their best OLs in a while. Nussmeier has ability. It's a matter of how quickly can he put everything together. The running game should be solid (maybe not spectacular). WR will be the biggest drop off. But some of that slack could be taken up by improved TE play.

Can you get something like the 2020 offense? It wasn't close to the 2019 offense. But it was No. 33 in total offense despite the loss of a Heisman winning QB, 2 (future) all-pro WRs, multiple offensive linemen and an all SEC RB (CEH). Plus, that offense had to play true freshmen QBs for most of the season. If not for the defense being an absolute disaster that offense was probably good enough to win more than 5 games (LSU probably goes 8-2 with a remotely competent defense)

We can only assume the defense will be significantly improved if, for no other reason, it can't get much worse. With that improvement, can the offense be good enough to win 9 games?

I mean Nuss has some experience but he's still a first year starter missing two really good WRs. Now hopefully a better running game helps cover some of that ground.

Our OL *should* be really solid as well

Nuss will be a top 5 QB in the SEC. Maybe top 3.

If you haven’t learned anything over the years let me let you in on a little secret. “Players over plays”. You have to have the talent, and the two new co-oc’s have been bringing in the talent. What has Belichek looked like without Brady? What has Payton looked like without Brees? What did Saban look like with Milroe?

Do the play calls help, absolutely, but if you have the Jimmy’s and Joe’s everything else comes together just nicely.

It’s Brian Kelly’s offense anyway.

I’m not in the football office. I don’t know. My comments are based off the information at hand. Just because they called a good game against Wisconsin doesn’t mean anything. One game vs a defense that had no idea what to scheme against.

You think LSU installed a new offense in two weeks? What new passing concepts did LSU use in the game?

It was the same 2023 offense minus the run threat from the qb. There was film out there on Nussmeir at LSU.

You and I both know that, according to 95% of sports message boards and social media across the internet, it’s ALWAYS the coaches and NEVER the players. Let’s not turn this around to try to sugar coat this.

What happened the last time elevated a couple guys with mediocre history and no experience to Co- coordinators?

Because this is Brian Kelly’s offense. Denbrock’s primary attribute was his familiarity with Kelly and his system. He did a good job at Cincinnati, but I don’t believe many people would have characterized him as one of the top OCs in the country at that point in time. It’s not that different from the DCs under Kirby Smart. Lanning and Schumann had no coordinator experience. They were just protégés of Smart and Saban.

The two situations aren’t comparable. One had Les Miles at head coach who left them on their own on their side of the bal. This situation has Brian Kelly lurking over their shoulders dropping advice.

Are you going all the way back to Malleveto? That's quite a reach. Since then we have had coaches with no experience excel, coaches with lots of experience fail and everything in-between.

There is no proven formula.

As if they haven't been involved with the offense at LSU with BK for the last 2 years. Otherwise sure, your example is the same thing - it's the same as hiring a couple rando's.

Next time stop after "I don't know".

Why wouldn't he? The coordinators coach a position as well.
