I believe closed primaries result in more radical candidates while open primaries result in elected officials that are more representative of the state as a whole
this. I like the “jungle primary” . Vote for the person , not the party.

Only a rich man can afford a primary election and then a general election. It favors the rino's.

You think closed primaries with no runoffs will stop this?

Hello? Think a minute

Why would I need an endorsement from a fellow repub, if I'm now the repub nominee? Why would I pay off his debt. If he jumps to the DIMs after getting beat, then hes done in politics

I haven't put much thought into this yet, but if Sen Bill Cassidy opposes it, I'm for it.

Ive never registered with a party. This will block me out of participation. Don’t like it. I vote for republicans and democrats depending on the candidates and the field. I don’t want to have to register for a party, ever.

Huh? We don't have party primaries right now. Everyone is on a single ballot.

Do you have a point?

A RINO is the same as a democrat.

“Most people won’t change their voter registration that fast.”

I’m registered independent and I’ll never change it.I was a registered Republican most of my life, changed to independent when Cassidy voted to impeach Trump.

I don’t give a sit if I ever vote in a state election again.Been voting for 50 years and nothing is getting better, just getting worse.Waste of gas to drive to the voting place.

It's because trash democrats who have no intention of voting Republican keep fricking up primaries.
. Can you give an example of when this has happened in Louisiana? Our jungle primary system begot Gov. Landry.

They did elementary through college.

And schools, parks, libaries, fire, police, etc serve a public purpose even if not everyone person uses them (more educated population, etc).

Exactly the point I was trying to make.

But this bill creates a benefit exclusively for the members of the party, excludes a third of the population and then those members have to pick up the tab.

All parties benefit, and the third of the population is wrong. The entire population can’t vote.

I looked up the numbers.
Registered voters 2,976,948
Dems 1,145,656
Rep. 1,009,386
Other parties 821, 906

Note Dems outnumber Republicans
I’m guessing the other parties include independents

From SOS website

then those members have to pick up the tab.

Seems wrong to me.

All taxpayers pick up the tab not just independents. And really it’s no difference than a guy like me that pays school taxes, BREC taxes, COA taxes, Mental health taxes etc. The community benefits; thus I benefit.

But this is a good debate topic unlike most of the BS here now. I do think they are rushing this through. It needs to be properly vetted.

I haven't lived in Louisiana in years but I know tons of democrats in Texas that do it. Unless there is a more ethical version of democrat in Louisiana (lol) it's happening.

ummmm, I hate to break it to you, but every election in La. mostly has 2 elections. Jeff Landry won a very rare election without a run-off

Right now in Louisiana a as situation that allows the Dems to huddle up, pick their top dog for Governor, and he inevitably gets into the general election by getting most of the Dem vote. He can husband his resources and save them for the general election.

On the other hand the Republican field has numerous viable candidates, and these various candidates have to really go after each other in hopes of qualifying for the general election. They have to campaign much harder and spend more resources.

I can see a closed primary system that sponsors elections for parties to pick their guy for the general election. I believe most states do it that way.

What will happen now will be they will just pay off the debt and have them drop out before primary, oh, I mean, "suspend their campaign"

Or deals will be cut... drop out early... you will get a job in my cabinet... a la Richard Nelson.

The endorsement payoffs will just happen earlier in the cycle.

A RINO might support conservative causes 1/3rd of the time.

A Dem will support none of the time.

Also, keep in mind most LA Republicans would meet this board's definition of a RINO.

In a closed system, the primary will feature republicans beating up on each other, in the general, they will beat up on the democrat.

Will call for different tactics for each, which will no doubt cost more money.

Is it a huge difference? No. I don't think it is big enough to mkae a big impact... but there will be some.
