So now we’re voting three times?

We had four elections in EBR last year.
We had four elections in EBR in 2022 also.
Four in 2021.

It makes party candidates battle it out prior to the general election.

Georgia has closed primaries if I’m not mistaken.

It passed in the house 60/40! But thanks to the moron senate President who gave key committees to dems it seems it will die in committee! It needs 5 yay votes to move out of committee for floor vote! So far, only two voted yes

I'm assuming this board would view Cameron Henry as a RINO.

I don't believe a pularity is good enough, for a primary or for a general election.

Which is a big reason why I like the current formate we have.

Yes you can build in runoffs in a closed system but that means more elections and more time and more costs.

I've said this before and I'll keep saying it. Louisiana does very, very few things well... but elections are one of them. We have a good system here.

For Governor, we had a single election. Under this new system, that would be impossible and could lead to 3 elections. This new model would unquestionably cost more to run.

How is that a benefit exactly?

Strong Republicans won't win too many general elections in Louisiana.

We are not a pure red state.

We only are a "Republican" state because of so-called RINOs.

We lean right on some issues and are very populist / left on others. We are purple in many ways... it's just that many of the purple candidates run under the R banner.

But if you start having general elections between a Dem and a far-right Republican... you aren't going to like the results.

I've often argued that we have too many election dates here in LA... many of which have very few items on the ballot.

If we keep the open system, we should never have more than two election dates a year. All the local governments can do a one-time adjustment to get on that cycle.

I'd do them in the fall. Every year, an October and a November date. That's it.

We did have one election in 2023, but that was an outlier. Usually we have two.

There are more registered Dems than registered Republicans. If you guys think you don’t need moderate Republicans (so called RINOs) you aren’t thinking.[

Was Landry far right? Just right? A RINO?

What about Jindal?
What was Rispone?
What was Vitter?

I'm trying to figure out what people are calling Far Right. I can name several Far Left in LA.

The labeling game here is ridiculous.

To some a RINO is anyone who doesn’t go along with Trump even if he’s pushing a liberal big give. agenda ( example Covid).

Yes we did. That is way too many. Adding party primaries—closed or open—necessarily means that there’s at least two elections for every state position, with the possibility of three.

So why would we change systems for the exact same result and an additional round of voting?

To prevent a Dem from coasting to the general while half a dozen Republicans spend resources beating each other up. The current formula really helps the Dems.

Good. Should’ve been done years ago but naturally the rino’s and libturds were always against it. When those folks are against it then it’s obviously a good reason to make it happen.

In 2015 and 2019, the Republicans beat each other up in the jungle primary, and the losers refused to support the top Republican in the runoff.

If we had a closed GOP primary in 2015 and 2019, what would have been different? You would have had all the republicans beat each other up in the closed primary, and the losers still refuse to support the winner in the general election.

Because the Dems lack candidates, you are often going to have them gather round that one candidate and that puts them into the general.

In our current system, we might get two GOP in the runoff, or we might get one GOP and one Dem, or we might get a GOP win in the first round.

In the proposed system, you are guaranteed to not have a GOP win on the first ballot, and are guaranteed to get a Dem into the general election.

Tell me how this is better?

Do you think Vitter and Rispone would not have made the general in 2015 / 2019?

I'm not a fan of the term.

To many posters, it sure seems like a RINO is anyone who dares support gay rights, abortion for rape or incest, allowing any sort of legal immigration, or having any desire or ability to try to compromise with the left on any governance issue.

Who is far-right? It sure seems like the far right is any Republican who does not meet that RINO definition.

By the way, I've talked to liberals who call JBE a DINO, which is hysterical.

The House on Wednesday approved a separate bill sponsored by Appropriations Committee chair Rep. Jack McFarland, R-Winnfield, which would appropriate $5 million for the implementation of party primaries this year.

The Secretary of State’s office estimates implementing the closed primary system will cost about $16 million this calendar year, according to a spokesperson for the office.

How about instead we spend that $16M on roads or something actually beneficial to the state?

So a closed primary prevents sour grapes from the GOP voter base?

How is that any different from GOP voters being pissy that their guy didn't get passed the jungle primary? Those same people will just be pissed their guy lost a closed primary.

One thing closed primaries for sure do is absolutely ensure that a Democrat makes the final ballot. Not the case with jungle primaries.
