Amazon investing in Diamond Sports Ballys

Amazon to invest in Diamond Sports as part of bankruptcy deal
Too early to know what this means for the Pels, but I think in general that having Amazon involved would improve the quality of the broadcast and production.
I'd rather them go with an OTA option long term as I think it'll help build the fan base, but if we stick with Ballys I see this as a good thing.

as long as i don't have to use the Bally's app to watch games, i'll be happy.

Good, because Prime would be a better option than the pixelated nonsense that Gray broadcasted the other day (everywhere except New Orleans, the game was broadcasted in SD quality, but in a 16x9 HD ratio).
However, those who currently have Prime, it appears it's going to cost extra to get access to local Bally's content.

That sounds like it’s not going to be “free” with Prime.

Honestly, these aren't really a problem for me. Frankly, I feel like we're very lucky to have such a quality production in a small market. Availability is the issue, which Amazon could certainly resolve.

I already pay $20/month for the crap that Bally puts out. It can't be worse than that.

Was only half listening but believe a podcast said NBA was against this as Amazon was trying to get the rights for “cheap”.
Meaning the NBA wants everyone to bid on these games / rights through them and not through Ballys.

It definitely won’t be free, it sounds like Amazon may just be taking over the ballys app

Under the terms of the RSA, Amazon also has committed to make a minority investment in Diamond and enter into a commercial arrangement to provide access to Diamond’s services via Prime Video. Under this arrangement, Prime Video will become Diamond’s primary partner through which customers will be able to purchase direct-to-consumer (DTC) access to stream local Diamond channels. Customers will be able to access all local DTC content, including live MLB, NBA and NHL games, and pre- and post-game programming, for the teams for which Diamond retains DTC rights, through Prime Video Channels. Additional details regarding pricing and availability will be announced at a later date. In addition, Diamond looks forward to continuing to partner with its existing MVPD distribution partners to broadcast its MLB, NBA and NHL content.

The production and quality of the video itself is not a problem, it’s literally just the Bally app. If I’m at home and I can get the Bally channel on DIRECTV, everything is fine. But if I’m traveling, the Bally app is notoriously horrible.

The interesting question about this is whether Amazon, having the rights to 12 teams, could allow people to spend one price and watch all of those teams.
It would be something very close to League Pass. I don't know if it'll be set up that way or not, but I do think that it puts Amazon Prime in position to ultimately make a bid for League Pass.
The NBA wants to increase fan viewership and engagement. Amazon had great success with NFL football and wants to expand its sports portfolio to drive viewers and people to its other products and services.
It would make a lot of sense.

If there is a way for me to use Prime to watch all non-nationally televised Pels games I would pay for it. I have League Pass but even where I am (El Paso) it blacks me out for Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Phoenix games. I don't understand why the NBA makes this so difficult.

Don't read too much into this. Amazon has a history of dabbling into things for Prime Video where if they cannot get their way they pull out and write off the loss. A few years ago they bought some English Premier League rights in the UK, supposedly with the intent of bidding for a larger contract when it was up. However, in a move surprising everyone, they declined to bid because it didn't work for them.
They can do this because unlike Disney, Comcast, Viacom, and Warner Discovery (and Netflix), they have spare cash lying around that they can lose without affecting operations. They can throw some money at a failing industry (RSN's) and see what sticks and what can be made to work for them.
So, if Amazon cannot get things perfectly right for them in relation to NBA, NHL, and MLB rights, they'll not hesitate to dump this investment. Given how MLB and now the NBA has reacted, i'm not optimistic.

I saw this in the Yahoo article which makes it sound like all you need is Prime??:
Nearly 40 teams across MLB, the NBA and the NHL have local television contracts with Bally Sports regional affiliates, but not all television providers have deals to carry Bally Sports networks. YouTubeTV users have long been unable to watch their local teams’ games without subscribing to Bally Sports’ streaming service.
Now, those fans should be able to see their teams play if they have an Amazon Prime subscription.

Probably at the same price it costs to get the current Bally's app. Prime Video has all kinds of add-ons you can pay for. This is not going to come free with a Prime membership.

Being accessible and reliable is the big win here.
