I had a bunch of dead crawfish in a sack the other day. I crushed up about 20 of em into a sludge and put a scoop at the base of about half my tomatoes. May be my imagination, but the ones with the crawfish seem to be a little thicker, but they are also on the setting sun side so may get more sun. I dont think my experiment would work in a few days.

I can't speak at a phD level but from my experience that kind of thing takes so much energy to decompose that it takes away from the plants.

It's best to thoroughly compost it in a separate pile and add to your garden afterwards

Here’s where I’m at. I planted and sowed everything on 3/24, so 3 weeks. I’m a little disappointed with the progress. Should they be further along?

Peppers (transplant from store) haven’t done hardly anything

This is the furthest along watermelon

Squash and Zucchini are doing ok

Eggplant hasn’t taken off yet, holding steady

Cantaloupe on the right. Pumpkin transplants (meh why not) on the left.

Butternut not doing much

Cucumbers doing ok, not climbing yet

Beans always seem to do the best for me

Strawberries

Tomatoes

Have y'all had cool nighttime temps? That might be delaying them. Peppers are so slow to grow. Then they just take off.

Mine are still small also. Cooler nights like Darth said. The leaves on yours look a little pale. Maybe slightly chlorotic. I dunno if it’s just the lighting in the picture, but I’d say as long as it doesn’t get any worse just wait it out until warmer nights come.

What kind of pumpkins? They seem to be a little chlorotic as well. Might just be a little transplant shock plus cooler nights.

Everything else looks pretty good. Give them some time. Once they establish some good roots they should take off with warmer weather. If not then it might be time to look into other potential issues or imbalances.

I just looked this up and it is caused by a high ph, is that correct? I tried correcting this after the soil was tested by adding sulphur. Sent a new sample out last week so I’ll see what it says.

If the ph is still too high, is there a fix for this season?

Yeah it hasn’t gotten out of the 60s yet

Could be that or a number of other things. Insects, disease, nutrient imbalance, root rot, not enough sunlight, transplant shock, inconsistent temps, or anything else that could stress the plant. I definitely don’t want to alarm you because it’s very minimal from what I can tell. See what your soil test says and give it time. It may outgrow it.

I feel like I never can get watering right. I have been hitting the various seedlings once or twice a day to keep the ground moist. Same with the peppers. Is that too much? Would they be ok going 2-3 days between waterings like the larger tomatoes?

A lot of that depends on your growing medium, but that’s a lot of water. I may water my plants every 2-3 days right now in the absence of rain. I don’t even have my irrigation turned on yet. Overwatering makes it really difficult for the plants to pick up nutrients and it effectively suffocates the roots. It can also contribute to root rot and fungus. Just as many plants die from overwatering than under watering.

It’s really difficult to tell with any degree or certainty without knowing how well your growing medium holds water, but if the top inch or two of the soil is wet or moist, don’t water.

I usually only water every couple days. Every day only if it’s been dry. Last year I couldn’t water enough and everything died though.

I wouldn't stress too much. You'll learn as you go. And every year is a new challenge. Just research what could cause the outcome you're seeing. That'll give you a starting point.

This year has been tough for me as I like to be early. It's been cool and wet for the most part. I've had to replant half my beans, all my cucumbers, and now my corn. That's part of it... learning what works and when to take risks.

Before you know it, you'll be rivaling Pillage for nicest looking and most productive garden.

I agree with the others. I have my automatic timer set to water every 3 days and automatic rain delays. As it gets hotter I may move it to every 2 days. I’d cut back on the watering some.

Thanks, all. Will get the labs back and cut back on watering and see how that goes.

I have at least 5 different varieties of peppers growing, and it seems they are all moving along at a different pace. My bells are doing the worst. Jalapenos look fantastic and the Cubanelles look like they are going to make a million peppers.

Got tired of cutting bamboo since it means I have to deal with my FIL. Just bought some 1/2" rebar to stake my tomatoes. Hopefully it's sturdy enough for them.
