The problem is that rear hazards are not required to be amber lights. There really isn’t a problem with flashing ambers, it’s the flashing brake lights.

The best thing to do when the idiots have their flashing brakes on, is to watch their third brake light to see if they are stopping.

It's illegal in about half maybe slightly more of the states. Most in the south allow it. The phrase in most that prohibit it is "except in emergency situations" which is subjective.

1 it's annoying.

2 usually those that do it decide they get to dictate everyone's speed by having em on and going slow in passing lanes.

Biggest issue is people with shitty tires going super slow because they don't keep up with basic maintenance

agreed. I am just saying i'd rather an idiot let us all know they are idiotas than the ones you can't see.

It is amazing how many people completely freak out when it rains...they slow down a ton and get all nervous. I know a lot of women who do this and they also are afraid to cross bridges

Should have their licenses cut up.

If you are driving in the rain it is NOT an emergency.

agreed

man i hate that shite, and if its a new car with the bright flasher lights, the lights make your whole windshield reflect it so you cant see for shite

if you cant drive without the flashers on, then pull off the damn road and wait it out.

What makes people think this is a good idea?

They are probably thinking it gives them more visibility for the vehicles behind them, but in reality, when I see emergency flashers, I immediately assume that the vehicle is stopped. (which can be really dangerous if you are driving full speed then see them all of a sudden and assume they are stopped.)

Agreed. It’s stupid and dangerous because I don’t know where you’re going or where you want to go.

I leave my hazards on even when it's not raining, just to make certain you can see me.

Because it makes it difficult to determine when a person is braking in a low visibility situation. It's dangerous.

I would argue that it is just the opposite and the danger lies in another area.

Probably the most studied arena for rain-driving safety warning is Formula 1. Their conclusion is a 4 hertz blinking rear facing red light is the most effective way to see a car in front of you in bad rain conditions. The problem on the road is you have to have everyone doing the same thing and cars have to all be equipped in the same way. Road car hazards blink far more slowly and could be mistaken for someone constantly tapping their brakes and worse still it could cause someone to drive into a car stopped on the side of the road which I have seen happen in a dust storm out west.

A better solution would be to have a fast blinking light for rain but you have to have cars equipped with it and everyone to understand the laws regarding their use. With the current state of car lights it makes the most sense to outlaw the use of hazards in rain. The issue is many people instinctively know the flashing lights are good for visibility and use them unaware that it is illegal and it actually can cause confusion.

As an aside occasionally in the UK and Europe you will see cars equipped with low-mounted "F1 rain lights" they are remarkably effective as long as the person behind recognizes exactly what they mean. All of this will be rendered irrelevant when LIDAR, RADAR, etc sensors become ubiquitous in cars.

Why do you think people who are slowing down put their flashers on?

I love rear fogs for rain as well

Too bad that most cars don’t have them
