Imagine if you will….a College Football Players Union (CFPU)

As if NIL and the portal have not changed college football forever-for better or for worse. Imagine the next level of greedy businessmen organizing a college football players Union to protect the rights, privileges, distribute the benefits, and hold universities accountable for the demands of its members. Sounds crazy right?? Well, 10 years ago NIL and the portal would have sounded unthinkable too. Players would pay their dues and expect collective bargaining in return. When does it stop? Or is it too late already? Higher education hangs in the balance.

Unionization and a salary cap actually might slow up the crazy amounts colleges are throwing at these kids. Would also level playing field, could play into LSU‘s hands.

You can't get parity without a salary cap.
You can't a salary cap without collective bargaining.
You can't get collective bargaining without a union.
So yeah, like I've been saying for a while, college football needs a union.

Fascinating question. Unions generally work this way: A group offers to represent the college athletes and all eligible athletes get to vote on accepting them. Now, do volleyball players get to vote? Is the union just for football?
Assuming a union is formed, each school would have an elected "union representative" similar to the NFL players union. You'd have 20 year olds serving as representatives for their schools. It would be a full time job in addition to classes and playing. They'd have to be the go-between on discipline cases, contract negotiations (including special issues only for their school), etc.
What could go wrong. I don't see it working as a traditional union but hey, anything is possible in the wild Wild West of college athletics.

Why would players want to form a union now? They basically have no workplace restrictions, no pay structure limits and unrestricted free agency.

After the inevitable breakaway. The top 40 universities will name a Commissioner to run the show. He and a committee will negotiate TV and Media contracts as well as implementing NIL and Transfer bylaws voted in by said committee………

Over the past couple of years, I have switched to a pro-union, players as employees model for college athletics. I think it is inevitable and will solve lots of issues. Pros:
1. Players get treated more fairly.
2. Football will get divided into different tiers: top 40 or so athletic programs compete w each other and pay higher salaries. Lower tiers pay less but for most players- getting a free college education and some money while playing is a good deal. If a 2 star player at a lower tier school develops notably, then they can transfer to a higher tier school for higher pay.
3. Salary cap eliminates the same blue bloods always rigging the system in their favor. Have real consequences for schools caught violating the salary cap.
4. Lower tier schools have their own championships. Have relegation based on athletic program performance.
5. Athletes in other sports are compensated based on their sports income. If n athlete plays a sport that produces little income, then they get a free education and pizza money. Still better than current setup. This will also help promote football. Fewer kids are playing football at the youth level bc of risks. This will incentivize playing football over other sports.

They already have the leverage. Wtf is a union needed for?

Imagine if you will, in just 10 years or so, all versions of football are played 7-on-7 with some sort of flag football rules. (The NFL Pro bowl will be flag style this year.)
The Elite 11 camps also could be a model. All skill people and no room for the big guys. The offspring of the Heards and the Noels had better learn to be bouncers.
Plus soccer moms are currently opting for Brayden and Jamal to play flag football rather than tackle football in elementary school and that’s where it all starts.
Just think, we could be on the verge of seeing the return of leather helmets and no face masks.
Yeah, once again, the lawyers are leading the charge.

I’m literally not even a “union guy” at all but the lack of self-awareness in this post is astonishing—it’s so outrageous that it’s honestly hard to believe.
Let’s think a second about the situation and what Drex26 is saying…
Currently, there are fans, boosters, businesspeople, etc., who have decided that it’s worth it to them—whether the decision is a smart one is besides the point; all that matters is that they’ve decided it’s worth their while—to do business with and pay money to college athletes on account of either their ability or their marketing value or some combination thereof. And, presented with the possibility that these athletes might strategize as to the best way to negotiate with the people they’re doing business with, drex26 calls them “next level greedy”.
One more time: Ensuring that their rights—to do business with people who want to do business with them—are protected, and that people are held accountable if they violate those rights, is “next level greedy” according to OP.
It’s even funnier when you consider what dog Drex26 has in this fight: Nobody is forcing him to give any money to anyone; nobody is taking away *his* ability to do business with anyone. No—the thing he’s upset about is the fact that people he doesn’t know are allowed to do business with people who want to do business with them. Why does this upset him? Because an entertainment product he enjoys might be a little different than he’s used to.
If someone is willing to pay money to these athletes, why shouldn’t the athletes be allowed to get paid? According to OP, it’s because he might enjoy watching them a little less. He says they’re “next level greedy” for putting their own livelihood above his enjoyment of his watching habits.
