Variety: Hollywood Says Goodbye to Worst Year in a Generation

2024 can’t come fast enough.
When the clock strikes midnight on Jan. 1, Hollywood will close the book on arguably the most tumultuous 12 months in a generation, with the town roiled by devastating strikes, the implosion of the superhero movie and deep divisions on everything from AI to Israel. But as Tinseltown ushers in a new year, will it suffer from a monster hangover? Many of the most vexing issues remain unresolved.
“There’s a huge leadership vacuum, and that’s not about to change,” says Michael Nathanson, the former head of MGM Studios and Columbia Pictures.
Nathanson, who started in the film and TV business in the ’70s, notes that Lew Wasserman, Bob Daly and Mike Ovitz commanded respect and fear, and could galvanize the industry in chaotic times like writers and actors strikes.
quote:
But nothing stoked panic around Hollywood like Marvel’s spectacular fall. The studio endured one headache after another as quality and box-office returns nosedived amid a churn of product, culminating with the disastrous release of “The Marvels” in November. The film, which cost $250 million, has earned just $203 million worldwide.
Iger blamed Covid, noting that, “there wasn’t as much supervision on the [summer 2021] set, so to speak, where we have executives really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.” But some industryites questioned that explanation, noting that executives were reviewing dailies even amid travel restrictions. Furthermore, Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” also was hampered by Covid restrictions during its production in 2021 but was released a year earlier than “The Marvels” and earned nearly $1 billion.
Adding to the misery, the studio cut ties with actor Jonathan Majors after he was found guilty of reckless assault and harassment in a domestic violence trial this month. Majors was poised to be the centerpiece of the next “Avengers” movie.
Now, the broader fear is that if Marvel movies are sputtering, then the entire theatrical ecosystem is in jeopardy, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” notwithstanding.
“We need Marvel movies to work,” says an executive at a Disney rival. “They drive people to theaters who then see other movies. When you have a movie like ‘The Marvels,’ it’s bad for all of us.”

Constantly pissing on your audiences and telling them it's rain doesn't make for a great extended business plan.

...and yet they will continue to put out superhero movies with bad cgi and stories, sequels of movies nobody wanted, and left wing propaganda. Other than Dune 2, i can't think of one movie i want/need to see in a theater for 2024. Maybe Argyle. Also, Dune 1's 402M on a 162M budget wasn't exactly a huge victory. There will be no Barbie/Oppenheimer juggernauts this next year.

It is when you remember it was released on HBO for free the same day as theaters

Yet, they continue to do it.
Which demonstrates their actions are NOT for the purpose of either entertainment or profit.

Isn’t it Deadpool 3 and a whole lot of nothing for them next year? Superheroes aren’t fetch anymore

2024 isn't going to be better. In fact, it could be worse.
Thanks to the Film Actors Guild and writer's strike, things are going to be pretty bleak for the small and large screens.

Hollywood has learned nothing. Has a single studio boss at any of the major players been sacked? Until heads roll, they'll keep propagandizing.

They should make more movies with feminist themes and LGBTQ characters. Actually they should invest billions into this type of content.

Gripped by the same stubbornness that keeps Claudine Gay the president of Harvard despite her plagiarism and incompetence.
They'll triple and quadruple down on the stupidity before they admit they're wrong. Time to make them bankrupt.

I think the sense of Ivy League school's elite education and quality has been ripped away in the public's eye.

Let’s just make good movies that bring people to the theaters and not depend on just expecting superhero movies to do that without effort.

I'll be honest, I think I went to the movies twice this year. Twice.
Easily the year with the least I've gone to the theater all time.

This is my entire thing. I care about well written female leads and/or main characters. Edge of Tomorrow was awesome, Alien was awesome, Terminators were awesome, ect. It's this weird fascination Hollywood has with Mary Sues and thinking every woman should be an idealized version of Michelle Rodriguez that is just killing female leads and characters. Rey could have been interesting, but she was perfect from the jump.

Meh.
Sure you need it for the OMG we grossed a billion !!
But raunchy actually funny comedies aren’t really made anymore. It’s too woke and can’t offend anyone
It’s all just reimagined remakes like Little mermaid and other shite
Nobody wants to watch aquaman and be lectured about goddamn climate change
The recipe worked for a 100 years and they just decided to not do it and piss off the theater goers and make cheap shittey CGI bukkakes and get mad when people aren’t interested

Disney's biggest issue is that it want to double dip into customer's pockets. It want us to have Disney+ and still go see movies in theaters? Why would the average person do that?
And the quality of Marvel films has dropped. I'm never going to see another Marvel movie in theaters ever again after that turd that was Eternals.

Of course you need Marvel movies to work. Because they are lazy as frick and normally make billions. But people are tired of the same shite over and over, and more than that, the quality of those have dropped immensely. And on top of even THAT, you constantly shite all over your core customer base and do nothing but berate and shame them for not liking the absolute piles of dogshit you now put out.
And I love the “Barbie and Oppenheimer notwithstanding.” So two pretty entertaining and somewhat original movies notwithstanding? Throw in Super Mario Brothers as well. And Top Gun: Maverick, while a sequel, wasn’t lazy and was perfected for a while before they filmed it. So successful movies can happen; you just have to try and give a little effort, which isn’t what they want to do. They want easy money.
Their argument is exactly the opposite of what it should be. It’s “we need these lazy movies to work” instead of “we need to shift our focus back to what got us here in the first place: quality, family entertainment.” And this attitude is exactly why they may never fully recover from it. Good riddance.

You’re hired!
Honestly, I’m not sure what they’re expecting. You make movies for niche audiences, you’re going to get niche results, no matter what IP you try to mask it with.
