its not a fair question, because with the many years of star trek on TV, that makes it more relatable to people from a comfort level, that you dont have with star wars.

comparing star trek movies and star wars side by side, you just cannot exclude its TV history to its likeability factor

I like them both and you could include most of the Star Trek spinoffs. Also loved Battlestar Galactica as a kid and the newer version a few years back.

Star Trek is our universe. It’s science fiction set in “our” future. There is a strong element of realism at the core. As such, I’d say it’s more relatable.

Star Wars on the other hand is science fantasy. It’s essentially a universe totally created from scratch. Despite the “long time ago and galaxy far far away, there’s no tie in to “us”.

As others have pointed out as well, the mediums have a lot to do with it. Star Trek started out with 79 hours of episodes,
compared to maybe 10 hours of the original Star Wars trilogy. The 12+ different Star Trek series now have over 900 episodes total.

Star Trek could focus on strong stories while gradually developing characters, whereas Star Wars had to cram in character development while telling its story.

I am going with Shatner. My man slayed alien poon all over the galaxy and was the first person to kiss a black woman on T.V.

All Luke did was channel his inner bama and kiss his sister...but these days people search for that kind of shite on Pron Hub so I guess that may diminish my position in the minds of the masses.

Star Trek has the better track record as far as storylines, character development, and just staying relevant.

Star Wars is a fun space adventure.

Though I'd say Star Wars is more approachable by the general public than Star Trek.

Hmmmm...

I prefer the Star Wars OT to anything in Star Trek.

That said, outside of The OT, Star Trek has been far and away a better long term franchise. Oh, there have been a ton of misses, but the average is so much better for ST than SW once you leave the first Lucas trilogy.

I love both but star wars would’ve competed if Disney hadn’t deleted the massive EU. Star Trek never crapped on its extended universe like that.

Star Trek. Way more sophisticated and well-rounded storytelling.

But a lot of my argument rests on how many bad Star Wars movies have been released. Star Trek has had a few duds but they never turned Picard into a drunken buffoon to deconstruct the patriarchy.

Star Trek for me.

A harder question would be:

ST2: Wrath of Khan vs SW5: Empire strikes back

Movies- Going with Star Wars here. No Star Trek movies are better than the SW OT

Shows- Star Trek, as of now. Same reason as above.

Character development- Star Trek, because of the series.

People nowadays tend to forget- television series used to be 20+ episodes a season.
Star Trek had 29 episodes season 1, 26 season 2, 24 season 3. Those were 1 hr shows (maybe 45 minutes, without ads), which gave you tremendous amount of time to develop characters. Even the one-off episodes that didn't stay in larger storylines, those served to expand on a character's depth.
We learned all sorts of things about ST characters; Kirk and Spock play 3D chess. Scotty loves his scotch. Uhura likes to sing. McCoy is from Mississippi, dislikes spaceflight, and hates transporters. Sulu likes swords and can fence. Kirk is a horndog. Nurse Chapel has the hots for Spock.

You got little of that in the Star Wars movies, other than what specifically was presented. Han and
Chewy were in the cantina, but you don't know if that's for drinking, or just to drum up business... Han might be dry for all we know.
