That's a cool statement by a politician, and I don't fault him for it as that's what politicians do - pander.

But the federal government shouldn't be recognizing or not recognizing religions.

That’s what’s why I posted it. It’s something he should be asked more about.

This is the crap that has scuttled DeSantis’ chances in 2024.

Trump may be a blowhard about a lot of things, but he doesn’t go nearly as far into culture wars stuff as Ron does.

It may gin up the clicks, but it’s a losing strategy.

So you get to pick and choose which religion is the right one?

Live and let be...

The whole satanic cult thing is all bullshite and just a ploy to elicit responses just like this one.

Congrats Ron, you fell for it.

Well, it's just a different flavor of populism.

Trump is not my first choice, but neither is DeSantis (although I would take DeSantis over Trump), because the Culture Wars that he engages in tempt him into disregarding and violating the constitution.

He's already done it a couple of times in Florida.

I don't have a problem per se with upholding traditional values because—whether people realize it or not—values are what people really disagree about and what the real political fight is about.

It's not really about the economy...everyone will say they want a better economy. It's about the fact that the left values virtue signaling on Climate Change over the economic consequences of prioritizing it and the right doesn't value the virtue signaling at all.

It's not really about abortion, it's about the fact that the right values the right to life of the unborn over the right of the mother to self-determine, and the left values the opposite.

It's not really about crime...everyone will tell you they want less crime, but again, the left values virtue signaling more than the consequences of prioritizing it, and the right doesn't value it at all.

So I'm not down on DeSantis for prioritizing the clash of values. I think he's right that that's where the real battle is. But he's too willing to bend the constitution for him to be my first choice. Because I value the constitution.

This seems to be the theme of your post. Care to enlighten us?

Trump recently:

quote:

I will implement strong ideological screening of all immigrants,” the former president vowed. “If you hate America, if you want to abolish Israel, if you don’t like our religion (which a lot of them don’t), if you sympathize with jihadists, then we don’t want you in our country and you are not getting in.”

It’s very brave of him to take a strong stance on an issue so many people would be against. To go against public will when you’re trying to run for president is very admirable.

I don't agree with that either. Do you assume everyone critical of DeSantis is pro-Trump? They both do stupid shite daily.

= balony

we have religious freedom - including the right to not practice anything at all.

HOWEVER = our constitution was written for a "moral and religious population" as per John Adams - and as has been our lived experiences for the past 2 centuries.

Everyone has the right to do what they want.

That does not give anyone the permission to practice evil.

we have laws against a lot of things that have proven to be incompatible with a civilized society.

we do not have the 'right' to practice white supremacy - OR do you want to allow the KKKers to just claim satanism is their religion and its sacrament is slavery.

Satan = evil

we can not officially accept evil as a protected class.

Correct. I absolutely disagree with DeSantis on this even while at the same time finding Satanism abhorrent. I can't want freedom for myself but deny it to others.

I think we need to be careful there. The federal government needs to limit its relationship with organized religion while still regulating abuse of religious protections. A group of people looking to commit Jihad or other illegal acts in the name of religion are not getting religious protections under our constitution.

This is the bottom line. I disagree and dislike satanists, but I don't see how you can support the constitution and try to recognize religion.

As it stands there are supposedly 80m Obama/Biden voters that would support less recognition for Christians and I'm a lot more worried about that than a couple (probably make-believe) satanists looking for attention.
