The piont is, there doesn't need to be one linking NYC and L.A. from the get go.
You focus on building regional one's where it makes sense (e.g., NE, SE, TX, West coast, etc) and go from there. Similar to what you see in Europe.
Just because it's a long way from coast to coast doesn't mean it doesn't make sense. Go look at China's rail system.
you need to try and keep up: the person i replied to said it's a travesty this country doesn't have high speed rail; as if we are the size of France. it's not a travesty, it's the reality that we are an enormous country. it's not far fetched to understand why we, one singular country footing the bill for the world's wants and needs, don't have as extensive of a network of HSR as dozens of other countries the size of Alabama.
nobody said anything about going across the country, but there's a very real, concrete reason we don't have a network of HSR: it starts with politicians and their vanity, and ends with a country the size of "their" continent, along with a couple of sizeable mountain ranges.

Other than along the NE Corridor and Chicago our cities are not set up for intercity train travel.
They are not like dense European cities while also being farther apart.

It would be nice and useful in some cases, but building it should not trump any other existing infrastructure project. Our shite is falling down around our ears. The longer we delay fixing it, the more it will cost.

LOL. The California bullet train from LA to San Fran is at an estimated $123 Billion to complete and not a single mile of track has been completed since it got voter approval 15 years ago. And when completed it will take 2 hrs and 40 mins. So twice the time and a higher cost than a flight between the two cities.
That's $123 Billion for 500 miles of track.

Exactly. 75 years ago we had a need and decided that an interstate system was a better idea than a rail system. What is the need now? What does highspeed rail get you that cars/planes do not? I am not diametrically opposed to rail but without an entirely additional network of subways/local light rail in dozens and eventually hundreds of cities, what did you accomplish?
What you ARE left with is tremendous maintenance and operational costs for the existing interstate system, airports, AND now high speed rail lines.

The Brightline screams thru our town (Stuart, FL) and I usually catch it. Three minutes later it's gone. Stuart, Ft Pierce, and Port St Lucie are vying for a station.

Next summer we are going to see the mouse for a few days then taking a cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale, then back to universal for a few days before home.
Plan is to fly round trip to MCO.
Working on getting from Orlando to Ft Lauderdale and back. Plan on renting a car but decided to look on up taking the train.
Round trip for 4 is over $500.
That seems insane. I’ll drive it.
