What

Shohei Ohtani's $700 million contract calls for him to be paid only $2 million a year for the next 10 seasons, with $680 million deferred until the end of the deal, sources confirm to ESPN.
The CBT hit on the contract is going to be around $46 million, a huge discount for L.A.

If I'm reading this correctly: Shohei Ohtani signed a 10-year, $20M contract and he will then make $68M every year from 2034-2043?
What in the world.

He was tired of hearing about Bobby Bonilla.

Good deal.

Does he avoid paying CA taxes doing it this way?

That is terrible for him financially. (I mean, I’m sure he’ll be fine. ). I’m surprised the MLBPA signed off on this.

Not even sure why Bobby Bonilla Day is a thing, players before Bonilla and after have had a deferment.

Seems like quite the competitive advantage to not have to pay a fair market salary until the player basically retires. But baseball has never really been about equal competition, so more power to you and 10 generations of your progeny, Shohei.

Leave the bulk of the contract to be paid later, after retirement. Make a “small” amount now, while also raking in millions in endorsement deals during his prime.

Nice Steve Young retirement fund.
Is it an insured annuity?
Dodgers could go belly up.
Asteroids and such.

Yeah there’s no way the MLB lets this slide

This must be a tax play. His endorsement income must be massive so if he can push off the contract money until the endorsement dollars slow down then maybe that's a benefit? Maybe??

Shohei is going to be retired, living in Japan and making 68 mill a year to not play and being a fricking King.

Apparently if he isn't living in California at the end of his deal he won't have to pay taxes on the 68 million

It is. It’s a circumvention of the tax which is why people are melting on twitters.
No one has ever done a deal quite like this.

He makes between 30-40 million a year in endorsements.

In 10 years, California will be taxing him at 90%.
Dumb move.

Dude could have been investing that $68 million each year while taking $2 million in salary. What an idiot

He'd be paying about 49% living/working in CA according to Fox Biz.
That $680 million will be worth about $3.50 in ten years so works well for the team as well.
