What they want you to think:

Reality:

WTOV lead story from last night

Life is good here; the kind of life that's dead or dying elsewhere. The difference in the news from here and Birmingham is jarring

One could live very well in WV on 100K a year. Might be a good place to retire.

Our HHI just over 180 and we live very well compared to people just 10 miles away in PA. The area where I live is marginally better than the area in PA I was living in before, but the same house would be 100k more for no reason at all.

I remember visiting a few months ago and noticing how empty the roads were. Not a lot of people around.

That's most of Appalachia in general. It's why I'll never leave.

My wife (of whom no photographs have ever been taken) was born in WV. Both sides of her family are from there. We mixed up the gene pool only slightly with my all-Mississippi blood. Anyway, I feel like I’m going back 40-50 years at least (that’s my only firsthand frame of reference) except in the touristy/college areas or Charleston proper. And we live in a rural southern Appalachian area.

My first visit to her formerly nice hometown now ?? still a “cute” layout with steep winding neighborhood streets and a semblance of a downtown did not disappoint. I was walking the dogs and saw a Pigpen-looking boy climb out of a 1970s Chrysler sedan of some sort, parked on the street. Then another. And another. It was a veritable white trash clown car.

I was shocked by how damned HOT and muggy and mosquito-infested it was in the summer. But the higher elevations, mountains, rivers, and some state parks are incredible.

Odd place. Not quite southern. Not quite what I’d previously known as Appalachian (WNC and ETN). Not quite midwestern despite sharing a long border with Ohio. Certainly not mid-Atlantic despite same with Pennsylvania.

Anyway, CSB short: odd place.
